We have a lady who is notorious for this. A player will begin a question with "Dealer" and she can't wait to interrupt and answer what the promos are, where the bathroom is, what the room's hours are, etc.

I've given her a death stare a few times but she refuses to take the hint.

The bonus is that she's on 2P2 and there's a decent chance she'll read this post.

I have seen on the display on the new shufflemaster deckmates an option which looks like a shot clock timer. While I hate the slow pace of play of today's games I can't think of anything more awful then a manually controlled shot clock and the ensuing complaints about the dealer starting g it too early or to late.

Try it my way, once. See how you like it. ESP when she's at the table.

It's not really a shot clock timer like the iPad shotclocks used by WPT. I suppose you could try to use it that way but it would be clumsy. It's just a simple countdown timer.

We use the timers but only in the traditional way. A player calls clock, dealer calls floor, floor gives instructions and tells the dealer to push the button. It's just a timer visible on the table instead of on the floor's phone.

Yeah, I understand their potential use in tournaments with time extension chips, but in cash games? Are you really giving dealers the power to muck a live hand due to time?

Even better timer is hooked up to trap door beneath players seat.....

Ol' Gil here, been away for a few months (nothing witty to post) but fun times have been had recently, finally decided after four years at my last place (and a 40% drop in take home over the prior 8 months) to switch venues. While its nice to make money again and the new place is way way better than my last place both in the way its run and the players I feel like Im in a rut in trying to get to know a whole new player base.

I know that is one of the challenges of going to a new place but it feels like its taking too long to find a groove in talking to players and being comfortable with the players to hold conversations and be my normal jovial (some say smartass) self. Just curious with some of you long timers how long did it take to get comfortable with players in your room after joining.

The last time I moved rooms it took a few months to get comfortable with any of the players. And then it was slow. But I made a point to try to become friendly with one new player each day. And since I had a clean slate I also made it a point to try to be friendly with some of the players that many of the other dealers don't care for.

After 4 or 5 months you should feel like one of the regulars in the room.

4-5 months sounds right. I can't think of a better number.

First I apologize for breaking the posting rules but I want to say that this is my go to thread on 2+2 so please keep the real life stuff coming. Second I appreciate all that you dealers do to keep the games running smoothly.

Those are other dealers ..... We are mostly screwoffs.

I know you're (mostly) being humble, but I second the motion that I'd love having you all (mostly) as my dealer.

I play in an 8-table room where there is a new crop of dealers every month. They're given iirc 20 hours classroom training, then thrown to the wolves, and many have never played poker or dealt in a casino before. Basically every problem you can imagine, it happens routinely: poor pitch, pushing pots the wrong way, not reading the board correctly, etc. Needless to say, it's a bad situation for everyone involved.

It's a union shop (which I think is great) but tips are pooled (which I think is horrible), and I'm sure this contributes in various ways to the lack of skill and experience. Sure, there are some dealers who have dealt and played for years, but on any given night, more than half the tables are staffed by someone who wouldn't cut it in LV or LA (the only two other places I've played), or tbh I wouldn't even hire to deal for a private event.

Anyway, even if your customers don't appreciate you, we punters hanging itt sure do.

Biggest pet peeve so far. people that fold but instead of tossing their cards forward, they try to help and put them under their blind/chips and push them forward so the cards are underneath

There are a lot of dealers here that agree with you, but I don't mind it. What I hate is the guy who as I am reaching for his bet to bring it in, pucks it up and tosses it....

This, and placing antes or bets on top of the button.

Or player in seat 1, when you moved the button to him and leave it a bit towards the middle so make a path to be able to pitch cards to seat 2, but seat 1 decides it’s his button so he picks it up and gets it closer to him again. Ugh

I hate when the one seat has their chips way far from the rail into the middle of the table then has their arms leaned out in front of them making it idiotically complicated to get the cards to the two seat. Why? Why?!?!???!?

Player is reaching out trying to grab the card out of the air as I'm pitching it to him. Why? Why?!?!???!?

I had to unfriend a player on Facebook earlier this week. I was very polite about it - after a big argument and he messaged me to tell me how my friend was an ******* (he wasn't) I just replied "I think we should limit our relationship to me pushing you pots."

I was worried there would be drama but I said hi to him when I pushed by his chair, he said hi back and the down went by without any issues.

I feel uncomfortable not accepting a player’s friend request. I never friend request them.

I would close my account before I accepted a friend request from someone whose only relationship with me is that they play where I work.

I tend to agree. I keep poker to Twitter and family/friends to FaceBook. I have interacted with poker 'friends' away from the game less than 5-6 times in many years ... although I wouldn't mind seeing a few of them on the golf course as I think that would be a neutral activity. GL

I kept poker staff and other players out of my Facebook for a number of years, but eventually one of them tracked me down and friended me, and I decided to jump in with both feet. I am a pretty nice guy though and don't do politics on fb, so hopefully it's a neutral, if not positive experience for most of them. I like seeing family stuff for many of them, and we high five about sports and whatnot.

There was one dealer I friend requested at one point who I am friendly with, and she declined. No big deal, to each his own, but I've always secretly wondered why since we were friendly. A few years later she was flooring (she had just started dual rating) and I walked up to her to tell her I was a call in and asked her to check me in. She looked at me and asked "what is your name again?" I guess I'm not as famous as I thought, but I suppose I now know why she declined.
