The worst people in the world, like to play poker. These are your customers. Can't let them bother you.

You did nothing wrong here. But some day, you WILL do something wrong, because you're human. And a guy like this will react this way. That's his problem, not yours. He wants to live in a world where everything works out just the way it's supposed to--but he's stuck in this world instead, and he finds it frustrating. Don't let him drag you into his nightmare.

We work in a mental hospital. Our customers are mental patients. You can't get upset by their unhinged behavior, that's just who they are, and our job is to deal with it. I'm not joking. Since i've embraced this analogy, my job-related stress has fallen to near-zero.

And one day this guy is going to step away from the table for a second.... make sure you deal him out.

Speaking as a poker player...I agree with you.

LOL, couldn't have said it better myself.

Being a great dealer isn't just about how well you pitch the cards and read the hands. It's about how well you can manage/control people. And also how your demeanor is in the box. Great dealers adapt to every table, in my opinion!

You aren't realizing that the wind caused by you pitching those cards caused the coffee machine to take longer than normal, and the button's delay in getting back to the table.

If you didn't deal him in he would have made it back in time, then he and the guy who lost the hand would be pissed at you instead of this guy.

The dealer can't win in this situaiton, no use in letting it get to you.

I agree with Answer20 along with above. "Random IS random". If you deal him out and he returns in time, now someone different loses a big pot and its your fault in their minds. You cant win, no worries.

This will not be the last time something like this happens. Just wait for the time when you flip a card in pitch and the replacement card allows a player to felt someone out of a big tourney. Random.

The story that inspired the mental hospital analogy reminds me to be grateful for some of the professional grinders in my room who have the right perspective. These are the same players that are disliked in the breakroom because they'll tip $1 even on a very large pot, where the dealers might receive $5 or more from a rec player on a pot of the same size.

I was speaking to one of those pros not long ago and asked him about situations in which he'd become aggravated by a dealer's actions.

Would he mind if a dealer accidentally exposed an Ace or King that was intended to be dealt to him and had to replace it with a 2 or 3? No, that wouldn't really upset him at all.

Would he mind if a dealer dealt a premature river that would have ensured that he would have won a nice pot and instead replaced that river with a different card that allowed a different player to win the pot? No, that wouldn't really upset him either.

Both of these instances are random, unintentional, and could have just as easily allowed him to be the benefactor of variance rather than an opponent.

Miscalculating sidepots, over-raking, dealing excessively slowly, not paying attention to the game, rolling the deck... these are things that absolutely would bother the pro.

My kind of player.

The dealers I work with frequently moan about dealing our high-limit games, because the players are so tough on them. This always surprises me, as they treat me just fine....

....but the last paragraph in the post about this one illustrates what's happening there.

as someone who has played 10k+ hours in multiple legal cardrooms, THANK YOU

believe me, "good" players notice. game integrity, hands per hour, keeping the fish happy when he does something annoying (instead of, say, rolling your eyes.) it's all very much appreciated.

Playing in a card room several years ago and one of the regs kept on losing even though he was getting the money in ahead. After losing another hand where he got the money in good he called a floor supervisor over, showed him his pocket pair, handed the supervisor a green chip, ripped the cards in half, and sat back down to continue to play.

The supervisor kept the green chip, chuckled, and brought over a replacement deck.

OK. A dealer friend and I have a disagreement on this:

If you have gone to dealer school but never held a job, do you apply for openings as a

1) Experienced dealer
2) Inexperienced dealer

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine putting experienced and then having nothing on your resume but dealer school might tip them off that you're dishonest. I mean, I don't blame anyone that "misunderstands" the options, whether on purpose or not, but I'm never putting 'experienced' in your situation and yes, I know it's a personal decision and not necessarily the correct one. I'm sure there are people with hiring experience in the industry that can offer more/better advice.
