Never accepted a demotion to dual rate, and I probably never will.

I may have posted these before, but a few more tidbits that I've observed from this floor:

* I'm dealing, one player asked another how much he's playing behind. Floor is walking past the table, glances down, and gives an answer.

* I was dealing a game that went from 6- to 3-handed. One player was doing everything he could to keep the game going, and I was happily obliging. Floor walked over with a bunch of empty racks in his hand (nobody called him or asked him) and had to be angrily chased away by the player.

* He often speaks in his native language to players sitting at the table. I think sometimes they even have cards, but I'm not positive on that. It's an uphill battle for me to enforce English Only, and while there is some leniency for players quietly talking to the side when they're out of a hand, I feel this is a horrible example for a floorperson to set. I've not yet grown the balls big enough to say "English Only" to him when he does it.

A bizarre incident:

Middle aged woman walks behind the 5 seat in a low limit game while I'm in the box, and during the hand she addresses me.

"Is your name Joe?" (My name is not Joe.)

"No."

"Did you use to work at XYZ casino?" (My hand has ended and I'm doing Push, Move, Drop)

"Yes I did."

"Do you remember Y that used to work there?" (Y is about my age, early 30s)

"Yeah I remember him."

"Do you know where he's working now?"

Um... what? As a matter of coincidence, I know where Y was working as of maybe a year ago when he came into my room to play, but I'm not about to tell some strange lady out of nowhere that.

"No I don't."

"Oh. I'm his mother and I've lost track of him." and she wanders off.

My players and I were all like WTF??!

Later, I see her standing in front of a table being dealt by a previous dealer at XYZ casino. I can only assume he got the same rundown as me!

This often happens to me. Floor sees his Spanish speaking buddy at the table and they have a 1,5,10 minute conversation. Obviously he is being dealt cards throughout all of this. Finally the other day a player actually says "is there an English only rule?" at which point I finally have to say something. Maybe he learned something from that but I doubt it.

Just bite the bullet and remind them that it is English only. I was once dealing a game with the CEO of the casino in the game and he was speaking some other language, so I reminded him it was English only. He apologized to me and the table.

I have come across one who stated "I don't know the rules". He was defending his dreadful lack of knowledge to his peers and bosses by stating that the rules don't require he know the rules. Since rule 1 says the floor can ignore all the other rules and make rulings in the best interests of the game, so as long as his motives are pure it's not important he know any of the rest of the rules.

This didn't impress his peers or his bosses who suggested he spend some time studying their rule book. They pointed out that there's a reason there are many dozens of rules, not just one. By this guy's logic, the entire rule book could be condensed down to rule 1. He's still employed, though. And actually he's gotten a lot better since then.

Last night was the Ladies event at our big annual tournament. My first push was through the tournament area, as the event began. Hello, ladies!

My next push was through the cash games in the main room. Not a single female player to be seen in this room. It was kinda weird.

Loved dealing that tourney, though. No card throwing, no frustrated profanity, no "how could you call?", no "keep playing that way, I'll have ALL your chips!", etc. I wish every day could be like that.

And at the end of the night, a few of them who had busted out of the tournament and sat down in a cash game were over-tipping. I felt like Hot Chick Dealer For A Day.

Got to deal some PLO last night for a change. I was corrected by the players 7 times in the down, and twice by a railbird. In all nine cases, nothing needed correcting.

(I let it go the first time the railbird spoke up, but I blasted him the second time--I mean, how much am I supposed to take?)

EDIT TO ADD: This was all one 30-min down, btw.

ANOTHER EDIT: One of the traveling dealers mentioned to me at the end of my shift that he's worked 59 days in a row without a day off. It's funny, right before he said that, I was thinking how tuckered out I was feeling because this was my unheard-of FIFTH day in a row of doing the same.

ANOTHER EDIT???: This traveling dealer also told me that they don't make NEARLY as much money as they used to. He's been doing it for years, but he's getting out now. He's already committed to our event, and 1-2 others, then he's done.

I've heard that road dealing is absolutely terrible these days.

I feel you on the "corrections" too YTF. I had to yell out "STOP!" last night at the end of the hand because instead of listening to me there were 4 people trying to talk over each other giving their incorrect opinions of who won what side pot and 3 people taking back chips that shouldn't have.

Spoiler:
I actually got toked extra by the winner for "taking control of the table" how often does that happen?

The other day when a player decided to move a button that didn;t need moving and then tried to defend himself ... I just shut him down with "If we need a second dealer here I'll let you know."

My shut-down of the PLO railbird: "Is there anything ELSE you want to tell me how to do?"

(Inspired, of course, by Deadwood's Seth Bullock--when Doc heard his plans and urged him to execute them right away, Bullock snorted, "Anything ELSE on your schedule that I'm behind on?")

I went home for a week to visit my family recently. They don't gamble, don't know the first thing about casinos, but they find my stories interesting. This trip, I hit them with my recent realization that poker attracts people with OCD, and they got a big kick out of the idea of the players in seats 5+6 refusing to give an inch--literally--in the "You're supposed to be over THERE!" battles.

I told you the Ladies event was the other night. Because it's our Big Annual Event, the dealers are at the tables WAY earlier than they need to be, for good measure, so I have a lot of time to sit there and do nothing while we wait for the players to show up and for the tourney to begin.

I spent this time before the Ladies Event trying to figure out how likely I'd get caught and get into trouble if I took my phone out of my pocket and snapped a picture of what I was looking at: Two players and a dealer, sitting at an otherwise empty nearby poker table. The players were in Seats 5+6, and they had their backs to me. They were shoulder-to-shoulder, surrounded by nothing but empty chairs, vacant rail, and green felt.

Man, I should have done it. My family would have been delighted if I had sent them that pic. So much so, it probably would have been worth the risk to get the shot.

***

By the way, this thought occurred to me last night, when I had to answer "Is it on me?", or "Who raised?", or something like that, for the millionth time:

Can you think of another game that people play where they don't watch/consider what their opponent is doing??? I can't think of a single one. Now add in that we're playing for money! How is this even fathomable, let alone commonplace???

Last night. Player in the 10 seat is sitting sideways with his legs under my chair,
his right arm on the table in front of his chips holding his i-pad playing
a game and he's leaning back almost against the player in the 9 seat.

The 8 seat is right at the end of the table leaving seat 9 about 8 inches, I can barely see seat 9.

I ask 8 and 10 to give seat 9 a little room.

Seat 8 looks at me like I'm out of my mind even though he has about 2 feet to his right.

Seat 10 says "Where am I supposed to move, you're in the way?".

It always blows my mind when I see an otherwise good player so oblivious to what's going on that I have to tell them to ante and put their antes and blinds in EVERY time!

New rule: if they don't ante, they don't get dealt in. (and we take the ante anyway)

I'm the same way. I take a lot of crap from the idiots, but every now and then I either let it out or say a sarcastic remark out loud. The most recent occurrence; there was a bet, we'll say it's $10, folds around to the last player left.

"What's the bet?"
"$10"
"Who bet it?"

My usually response is "Seat X" while in my head I say "The only other player with $10 in front of them"

Well this time, that last part slipped out. Thankfully, the guy laughed and gave me credit for my "witty" remark. There's definitely a lot of people who would not have found it funny. I got lucky.

I have found the best way to let these frustrations out is to have a player who is completely fine taking your crap. There's a younger kid who comes in a somewhat regularly and whenever I deal to him, we just take shots at each other non stop. If he asks who the action is on when it's on him, I can sarcastically say "It's not on you, we're just all looking at you for fun!" and he will just laugh. Sometimes he tokes me if he thinks I get him good.

I could remember to ante every hand for hours, but the one time I forget, I feel like an ass. Oh no, I'm *that* guy!

You guys are great, lol. What about both? Anybody who doesn't ante doesn't get a hand AND has to ante double. Sounds like a plan?

When it's heads up between the 7 and 8 seats and seat 7 has bet.

Look confused and look around the table then back at 8 and
point to the $10 in front of seat 7 and say "I think it was him.".

Maybe I'll do it some day.
