I guess you glossed over my earlier post. But you did an excellent job of taking my more recent post completely out of context.

On a more serious note, thank you for taking several years off of my age. My receding hairline and sore back thank you.

If +1ing was allowed, I would do so for this again and again.

At least once a week I read or hear about something that makes me do the Captain Picard /facepalm, today in fact being one of those days, and it just drives me to move up and into management in order to do something about it instead of sitting around seeing people butcher things again and again.

My favorite is when a player says to me "I've been playing poker for 30 years, and I've NEVER heard of that stupid rule before!" The rule they're referring to is always something standard, like Verbal Is Binding, Cards Falling On The Floor Kills The Hand, etc., etc.

Used to be standard. These days they let those cards play.

Dealing a daily tournament at WSOP a few years ago. Seat 10 bets 600 seat 1 calls and seat 2 goes all in for 925. Seat 3 looks at me while pondering a call and asks if seat 10 can re-raise. I say no and get a major disagreement from 3 players at the table. As I try to explain the rule, they tell me that they have been playing for blah blah blah years and I have no idea what I'm talking about. These arguments sway the rest of the table into agreement that I am a moron and all these dealers are terrible. I call the floor and explain the situation (minus the namecalling part) and the floor backs me 100% of course.

Result, seat 5 says "Wow, I've played 20 years all over the country and have never seen this rule. Must be some weird house rule."

I almost missed the punch line because I thought this was supposed to be the surprise ending.

Speaking of the WSOP: feedback on social media from local players who are out there now seems to concur that that this year's crop of WSOP dealers is the worst ever. And that's saying something!

Totally unrelated rambling: I just realized something. The poker boom has obviously subsided greatly, but it's still WAY more popular than I imagined it would be, ten years in. Again, I remember the poolroom boom in the 80s that was over in less than a year, because pool is hard, and luck alone can't make you feel like you're a champion for a day.

But I've been wrong to compare the poker boom to the poolroom boom of the 80s--the more apt comparison would be to the blackjack boom in the early 60s. Blackjack wasn't incredibly popular then, casinos were dominated by dice tables, until card counting was pioneered. People were drawn to the game that you could actually win at. Of course, almost nobody actually did win. But the game still made them feel like a champion when they played, because you start with two cards, and 98% of "expert play" is "stand on 12 or more vs a little card, and 17 or more vs a big card".

I just now realize that hold'em is popular for the same reason. 98% of "expert play" is "wait for two big cards, then hope the people playing smaller cards don't suck out." I'm convinced that the overwhelming majority of low-limit cardroom regulars think that one sentence is enough to separate the winners from the losers, and their losing results don't enter into the discussion.

I wasn't even talking about rule issues. I was referring to their inability to handle chips and cards, follow action, lack of knowledge of basic etiquette and basic cardroom procedures.

Isn't every years crop of dealers the worst ever?

Yes. In part due to the viscious cycle that has been beaten to death here before. I would estimate that 40 to 50% are first day, break ins, never pitched a card outside of dealers school, rookies. It just seems to me that an event of that magnitude is no place for 1000 first day dealers. The real fun is watching the dealers stumble all over themselves on each hand of stud or draw games.

In related news, I was musing the other day about how much fun it would be to get someone to teach me how to pitch and shuffle so that I could audition and try to spend a summer experiencing things from the other side at the WSOP. Obviously I get why it's a terrible place to work but knowing that I'd be leaving to go back to the academic rat race might mitigate that somewhat. It would be an interesting way to get close to a wide variety of games, many of which I can't afford to play myself.

Thanks AKQJ10 This looks to be the biggest poker room in the area with the most action. Looking forward to a possible full time position.

I've heard nothing but good things about Mike Smith, and heard big things are in store for this room. The audition and interview went well.

Keep your head up and all will go well! I've heard good things are coming into that poker room. If everything goes well they can take over some rooms in that geographical area! Good luck!

I almost never delete posts in this thread, but someone just mentioned the name of a cardroom employee who does not participate on the forums. Please be more careful about that in the future. Thank you.

My audition went well for md live, we had a group of 8, was supposed to be ten but two didn't show. I knew 6/8 from my two current jobs. No PLO which was surprising. They said we had one of the better abd most lively groups. Now just waiting in the call.
