***Moderator Breakroom Thread Posting Guidelines Update 7/16/2019***

In June 2019, crowd-favorite poster and story-teller extraordinaire youtalkfunny (aka YTF) passed away unexpectedly. At the request of the thread and forum regulars, this thread was renamed in his memory. (Further info on YTF to be added.)

This Breakroom thread is unlike all the other threads in LCP. It was specifically designed to allow current and former poker room employees to have a place to vent or discuss work related things amongst other employees. It is the virtual equivalent to a real employee breakroom. Because of that, it is primarily for the use of poker room employees only. Others may post in it, should they have a particular piece of information or fact that will contribute positively to a discussion going on in there. But it is not a place for nonemployees to argue with dealers or floors about their rulings, insert themselves into employee to employee discussions, ask general questions of dealers or cardroom employees, or target or attack any decisions discussed in there.

Non-poker room employees are welcome to read the thread and get a peek into what goes on in a poker room breakroom. But please be cognizant of the purpose of the thread, and post sparingly only when you have something particular to add to the discussion. If you feel a topic is worth discussing in the open forum, then you can start a thread on that topic there.

If you have any questions as to the appropriateness of a post for this thread, please check with a moderator prior to posting.

************************************************** ***

Welcome to the Breakroom!

What is this thread?

The goal of this thread is to give industry employees a place to chat it up about anything and everything work related. Something funny happen at work tonight? Did that Dual Rate finally let you EO? Did you stack that chump at the weekly dealer game? It's all about building community here and getting to know each other. Got something you want to say that might not be worthy of it's own thread? Shout it out here.

Of course, anyone is welcome to post here, whether you are a gaming employee or not, but I wanted to try to build a lowish content thread of chatter for all the cool cats here I've met.

**********UPDATE re scope and purpose of this thread**********

These comments are not directed at any one person.

In general, it was not created to be a place for non-gaming employees to come and poll the dealers whenever they have a question about poker. There is a whole forum dedicated to those types of threads. It may get a bit lax from time to time, but we didn't want this thread to devolve into the tedious rules discussion on basic items that we've all seen a thousand times before. That said, it was decided that anyone regardless of employment status may post in this thread, but it was designed to be a place for job related jibber-jabber.

If you are a gaming employee and are seeking out answers to questions based on procedural rules and situations at work, it is perfectly fine to post them here.
(Examples: How many of you use a dead button rule in cash games and has it caused any problems?
A dual rate I am otherwise on friendly terms with made a bad ruling on my game and made me look bad in the process what's the best way to address this?)

And I guess it's up to me to get the ball rolling.

So I'm pushing into a low limit game and the outgoing dealer says to me "The rack is great."

Uh... what? Normally if there's a problem with the rack here you'll just get a comment like "The rack is a dollar short, I already told the floor" or something like that. But "the rack is great"? That's a new one.

Obviously I spend an extra couple seconds counting the bank trying to figure out his cryptic message but to no avail. Then I look up and see them. Girl in the 5 seat. HUGE rack. Ohhhhhh, the lightbulb in my head goes on.

That half hour in the box was very enjoyable.

Of course, I used the same line for the next dealer coming in. I wonder how many dealers before me had said "the rack is great."

One of the most funny dealer stories I have heard at work went like this.

There was a 6/12 limit game going and a regular, who was a kid who was one of those who you wish got stacked during your down but you seemed to push him the most pots in 30 minutes, raises and everyone fold the said something smart to the dealer and was just being a general d-bag.

The dealer stacks up the $3 small, the $6 big, and the $12 raise and places them on the rake. The kid tells him "you wouldn't dare!" and then the dealer dropped the money into the rake. The kids eyes get HUGE and starts freaking out finally another reg who was an older guy tosses him $20 and tells him to "shut the **** up you got what you asked for".

If you knew the dealer, knew the kid, and knew the old guy this story is priceless. Even not knowing them, and working in the industry we have all wanted to do something like this at least once.

rofl, that's a good one. You want a rake?! I'LL SHOW YOU A RAKE!

Got kind of a similar story. Older dealer getting stiffed during his down and is frustrated. This is a room where they have actual 50 cent chips, so every once in awhile there'd be a real cheapskake who'd throw you a buck and say "Chop it" meaning to give him 50 cents back out of the dollar.

Well dealer FINALLY gets a toke, and of course, the guy says "chop it." The dealer takes the chip, places it halfway into the alligator's mouth, and SLAMS the drop closed, breaking the chip neatly in half. Half of it falls in the rake box of course, and he takes the other half of the chip and places it in his toke box.

Welcome to the jungle. In your honor I'll tell a quick story about my first night as a dealer. It's about 3am and I got through the night. I did pretty well for my first day. No major problems or anything.

There was 1 game left at 3am, a 4 handed 2/5nl game with regulars. In this casino, the cards were required to be changed every 4 hours. The cards are changed out and the 4 regulars are discussing whether to keep playing or call it a night. They decided to "play a few more hands".

The cards come out and the action goes like this. Fold. Raise to 30. Raise to 100. Raise to 200. All In. Call. Call. All in the blink of an eye. My mind is spinning. Whaaaaaaaat just happened??!!! All I could think was my god, do you guys do this at the end of every night?

Then they turn over the cards. On the very first hand it was AA, KK, and AK. Aces held up. The game broke up for the night. It was a dizzying and frantic way to end my first day on the job.

I had a day today... in a new casino in PA, and if I do say so myself, I am one of the better inexperienced dealers.

I am on Three Card Poker, which is kind of a vacation to me. It's less stress, fewer "grinders" and generally a happier clientele than blackjack (or so I have found on my one other day on the job in TCP).

So my relief comes to tap me out and says "Hey, I am not real comfortable with the game, can you hang out a few hands and help me?" I tell him no problem. Well, it turns out he remembers nothing from training... nothing at all. So I basically retrain him in about three hands. I ask him if he feels better. He asks me if I can hang a couple more hands. I stay. When he finally says he is okay, I go on break and check the clock. I have 4 minutes left on break. Now, I could take my whole half hour and screw the rest of the relief string, but I don't want to be a dick, so I go back. As I am tapping him out, I say "You owe me 26 minutes next time through" He says okay... so I assume he will take the 4 minute break and give me 56 minutes of a break...

An hour and a half later I am tapped out again. I guess he forgot.

Oh, but this puts me in line for the early out, so no big deal... I am a little psyched...

Except a dealer gets sick and I am in there for the last two hours... no early out... in fact, a half hour longer on the floor.

So...who's hiring nowadays?

Not that I'm moving again any time soon. But it looks like Massachusetts is filibustering their way out of approving casinos again (deadline this week, doesn't look good), making me feel dumb for falling for that old gag again.

Hey come on, be nice to dealers. Tips are a huge part of their income and who wouldn't hope that when someone wins big, he tips big too?

Your 50 cent chips made me think, we just got those up until recently we had rolls of halfs in our poker tray....anyways...

This one dealer after getting stiffed for the down by 1 or 2 people would take 20 1 dollar chips outta the pot (3/6) and crack both rolls of halfs into the pot like eggs. Funny as hell then he would push the pot to the stiff who won. Usually a young college kid who was clueless.

The dealers excuse when asked why the heck did he do that????? He has to color up his tray during the night... buttons right...everyones in.....

As long as employees don't come here to complain about tipping, this thread should have a long life and accumulate some great stories.

Non employee but as someone who generally ends up on the side of "people are dumb, I feel bad for those who must deal with them daily" I could never troll this thread. Keep it up, I am oddly fascinated by the stories you guys must have just on a day to day basis.

You've got to quit offering me jobs, I'm really starting to feel like I might be an ingrate.

I just moved back home to MA in October, just moved into this apartment in March. I'm gonna try to stick it out up here, at least until this lease is up in spring.

Thanks, though.

Alright I've got a few of those. This one's about a cheating dealer.

The rake in the room was 3 bucks, and the JP drop was another 2 bucks. It was required to color up the drop so that the 2 dollar jackpot drop would be a single 2 dollar pink chip, and the rake would be a pink 2 dollar chip and a white 1 dollar chip. What this dealer would do is color up the jackpot drop and rake and leave it all next to the rake drop, then when the hand was over if she received a tip, she would drop the rake as normal, and then she would take the tip and the 2 dollar JP drop chip and drop them in her box. I never saw her do this, the morning regs she dealt to have one foot in the grave, and I guess she never did this while the floor was looking. It was surveillance that actually caught her. That's right, surveillance actually caught something going on in a poker game without being prompted and action was taken. Has that ever happened in another cardroom ever?

I usually started 4 or 5 hours after this girl, and before we found out she was a thief I would make comments to her like "wow, had a good morning huh?" and you know what she would say? "Yeah, I just got lucky." Lucky my ass.

I remember covering for her shift once because I thought, "Man, she always does really well in the mornings!" Somehow I didn't exactly have her success. Now I know why.

The day she was caught it was early in the morning, and by a twist of fate she was the only dealer on duty dealing to the only game going. A flurry of gaming officials and security came in and said to the floor "We need her off that game, NOW." They had to pull the lid and lock it up (This casino did not allow floormen to deal in a pinch.)

I will never understand thieves.

Someone PMed me and wanted the following story posted anonymously, the following are not my words.

"We've been live for 2 weeks now (not even a full two weeks), and we have blackjack I-tables (not every table, just some of them are I tables)... they read the cards, and have a little computer display in front of each player to let them know point totals, let them bet, and everything... so it is a dealer's dream. We just deal. We don't pay, don't take, just deal. When a customer buys in, we call out the amount, and punch that amount into the terminal and it shows up electronically then we drop the cash. We need approval above 300 and a supervisor swipe above 400.

Well, a new dealer decided she was going to give some subsidies. Her friend came to the table and would buy in for 100 and she would give like 125. I guess she was testing the place. Well, she finally went for the "big score" a few days ago. A friend bought in for 100 and she put in 400, called out 100, dropped the money and went on her way dealing.

She thought she got away with it until the State Police showed up in the break room.

Oh yeah, they had been watching her for days. She's up on felony charges now."
