Had a very awkward situation at casino I play at. Regular comes up to me when I am grabbing a soda and asks to borrow a couple hundred to get in the game and says he will give me a personal check that I can cash next week when he gets paid. Told him sorry, but that I don't lend money to non-family members. Guy got a bit huffy with me, but walked off and tried the same thing with someone else.

Haven't had this happen to me before and was wondering how common it was? Who in their right mind would actually loan money in this situation? Is this something that I should tell the floor about or just ignore (seems like if he is living that close to the edge he has no business in a casino in the first place).

The only time someone has asked me for $ in a casino was when I used to play at the Taj and random bums would ask for stakes. I would say it's incredibly rare for non-crazypeople to ask to borrow money when there's ATMs on site.

This is very common in small poker rooms / markets where it is the same faces at the table all the time... doesn't mean you are obligated to loan anything of course.

It's common to get asked.

Don't do it. Don't feel bad about saying no either. Remember, if his check is good, all he needs to do is not ****ing gamble for a week and he could stake himself.

In general, the faster someone says they can pay you back, the more suspicious you should be about how they got into the situation of needing money in the first place.

this is why you shouldn't lend any money to people like that unless it's a close friend.

I've been asked a bunch of times, only said yes once, and that was to a pretty close friend. I've only ever asked my roommate. I had left most of my cash at home, lost my first buy in and asked if I could borrow a couple hundred until we got back home.

My dad gave me two pieces of advice when I went off to college: Don't ever loan your friends money or your car. You stand to gain nothing from either transaction, and you risk losing a lot more (including their friendship if they total your car or never pay you back).

It's pretty common.

Because it is common there's no need to say anything to the floor unless the guy was really bothering you.

Lent money to security guard money once because I thought he still worked at the card room. Well needless to say I never saw that money again.

Lent money to a dealer once and never saw that money again.

Lent money to a friend and he paid me back within a week.

I won't lend any money to anyone anymore unless they are a friend and I know he's good for it.

pretty common. best to just say no. don't feel bad about it. I've said yes a few times and even the times I got paid back, I still regretted it.

Think it's pretty sad how many people in this thread wouldn't loan money to friends, isn't that part of friendship, helping each other out? If I didn't think they would pay back they wouldn't be a friend, and if it turned out they screwed me over then it's a pretty cheap price to pay.

To the OP's question, it's pretty common where I play to be asked to lend money. It's a small room with a small player pool. I used to have a strict 'no lending/no borrowing' rule, but i've softened that stance, I still don't borrow just because I don't like owing money, but I will lend to a reg who has a faultless rep for repayment.

I haven't been burnt yet and tbh even if I did get burnt for a couple of hundred which is the most I borrow, it would still have been overall +ev, from the amount of times they've borrowed and the cash has ended up back in my stack within an hour or so, and the intangible ev of been seen as a nice guy around the table etc...

I never feel any obligation to lend though or awkward in saying no. It's my money and I'll choose what to do with it, I'll just say 'sorry, I can't', if someone got huffy at me for not lending them money, there's no way I would ever lend them in the future.

"No."

Regarding loaning money to friends, only do it if you're comfortable never seeing the money or the friend ever again.

Give gifts, not loans.

Unfortunately this is a sad but true statement. I think anyone over 40 can tell you this from experience.

On an unrelated note back in like 2007 or 2008 I was approached by Backpack Steve who asked me for $125 to get in a daily tournament and he'd give 50% of his winnings. When I said no, he then offered me poker lessons for $125. I thought it was pretty funny.

Your dad seems like a smart man. I follow the same rules but no one ever taught me them.

One of the bigger degens at my poker room who normally plays higher stakes than me asked me for some money to get into the $500 max game I was playing. I told him "No" straightaway. He explained that he had maxed out the amount he was able to withdraw from the bank for the day. When I refused again he offered to buy me prepaid credit cards in exchange for cash. I agreed and he got me the credit cards with the receipts and I gave him the money and it all worked out. Degens are going to degen.

I would never loan someone I was not very close personal friends with money. At a casino, I would light the money on fire before loaning it to someone, cause u are never getting it back.

If it is a personal friend and you know they are good for it, that is acceptable, but, even then, you need to have an arrangement so you know they aren't tilting or spending money they can't afford.

Context. Friend asks to borrow $200 for a week to buy food for his family ..... I help him out. But wanting money for gambling is a different animal.

Not only should you not feel bad for not lending money to this guy, you did him a favor by saying no. If he can't afford to sit the game, he'll be scared money and will just give your money away. Unless he's a maniac, in which case, he'll just give your money away trying yet another unsuccessful bluff on OMC.

Also, if you help him spend next week's money this week, you'll help perpetuate a spiral of debt. Just say no.

There's plenty of hard-luck stories that'll get me help a brother out, but none of them originate in a casino. Lose your job and can't eat? Sure, feed your family. Power bill twice normal because of the cold? Here, Man, catch me back when you can. Bust out of the 2/5 and need a stake to get back in? FU, you freakin degenerate!
