Anyone know how I can better organize my live notes? Anyone know how I can better organize my live notes?

I play in a small casino and have notes on most of the regs, but even in a small casino there are hundreds of players spread over different days. Currently I take notes by putting them in Evernote, but I have roughly a paragraph on each player and it has become incredibly bloated. I'll have to scroll quite far in order to find the correct player to add a note or review my notes.

What I'm looking for ideally would be a way or an app where I could quickly "grab" my notes on each player when they are at my table and put their 9 paragraphs (1 for each) into a separate space so its not clogged up with 90 other player notes that aren't even at my table. I realize I could copy / paste each paragraph into a separate note manually but this would be a huge pain in the ass as tables are constantly changing.

Does anyone know of an app or way to do this quickly?

The reason we take notes on internet players is because we have nothing to go on except a username and whatever stats we have on them if we use a HUD.

In live casino poker, you should be able to look at someone and know what type of player they are from memories of playing with them in the past. I've never had a problem with that and I never have or would ever think I would have to start taking notes on hundreds of players who come in and out of my player pool. For one thing, how are you giong to know everyone's name? Are you planning on writing "The old guy with the glasses" or "Younger internet type player with a beard"?

In my opinion it's just not necessary to take notes on live players when our memories should do just fine. You should be paying attention to the game instead of searching through your database the entire time your at the table.

Um ... ask?

It seems odd to me that you launch into a totally correct exposition about how live poker is different from online and the necessity of remembering things, and this is the part that you stumble on.

"Hey, we've played a bunch of times but I don't know your name. My name's Sam N."

Offer a handshake.

Easy game.

Or if you want to be a creepy stalker type, just memorize the three names after you on the list and after you sit down, you know the next three names.

or, as my former coach used to say (God rest his soul), "If he is a guy that would do that, just put an "X" on his forehead"

If that's all it took to get people to think of you as a total idiot, then you should definitely do it.

I once read that NASA was spending a fortune trying to design a pen that would work in zero gravity to no effect. Finally, the Russians suggested 'why not use a pencil like we do?'

Drop the tech and use a notebook.

Thanks for the replies but I disagree entirely. Notation is valuable, I won't argue the point though as it isn't the topic.

Pen and paper would not only not solve the problem I described it would make it worse AND draw attention to the fact that I'm taking notes which can only be a negative.

Still looking for a solution, or even maybe someone else who has taken notes longer and perhaps developed a better system over time.

I've developed a system over time. Mental notes. You're over thinking this and the work it's going to take you will take too much attention away from the game, as well as exhaust you unnecessarily.

Were you also the one a while back that was going to take a picture of everyone for your database?

I'm glad that most other players incorrectly believe that notation doesn't have incredible value, as then they would have extensive information on me that they couldn't possibly retain unless they have photographic and long memories.

If anyone can help on this topic, rather than trying to convince me note taking is worthless I'm still looking.

Don't take it the wrong way, I wasn't trying to criticize you I'm trying to help you.

Look what you said in your own words:

Does it have a search feature?

This process of adding notes and scrolling down to view notes on each player is adding a lot of work that could all be for nothing anyway, since maybe last time you played with the guy he was tight because he had bills coming up, and now he had a big paycheck so he's playing loose, and it's already becoming too bothersome which is why you started this thread. Am I right or am I wrong

I'd love to see a couple of examples of OP's notes.

If you are going to outright reject all advice about whether you should be doing this, instead selecting only for posts that validate the practice, then my comment might get lost because I absolutely agree that the effort required to keep track of players this way makes it a net loss versus relying on what you remember. That said...

Learn to take notes like a nerd. If you store notes in plain text where it is searchable and mutable, then you can leverage the the tools we have been developing for decades specifically to search and mutate text.

There is zero benefit of storing a hundred player notes in a file called `poker/player_notes.txt` versus in abstracted files such at `poker/player_notes/albedoa.txt` and so forth. It costs you nothing and makes your life a lot easier to break them out into their own files.

Save all your notes whether related to poker or not in a folder called `notes` in your Dropbox account, then get an app like Bear, sync that **** up to your notes folder, and you're on your way to being the biggest nerd in your card room.

Now when you see me and Sam N. at your table, you can quickly access `albedoa.txt` and `sam_n.txt` and use the pin feature in Bear app to pin them to the top of your list. Boom, you've basically reinvented the HUD but for live poker.

And since you stored your notes in plain text, not only does it look pretty as **** because you are writing in Markdown and letting Bear app style it all nice for you, but when you decide to move on to another app or service, you will be free to do so frictionlessly because you still have plain ol' text files.

Google Glasses w/ face recognition ftw.

Store each player under facial recognition pattern, modify the file at your leisure at home.

I would consider looking for a personal wiki with a browser interface so that you can have a master list of players by name (I would use descriptive nicknames....so I might have a file for "Jesus Dave" because he looks like Jesus and "Fat Dave" because he is 300 pounds and "Really Fat Dave" because he's over 450) and a page for each player, then open browser tabs for each player currently at your table.

I am actually not sure if there is an app that does this. I make occasional use of a desktop personal wiki that doesn't have an Android app.

the app “Poker Income” has a field for players. Never used it, so no idea how user friendly.

I just checked my app and it's correct. There's a field for First name, Last name, and there are 5 stars where it lets you rate him for both "aggression" and "tight".

There's a field to write notes, and to my surprise, there's a spot to put up his picture and when you press the box, the camera opens. forgotmyoldname here is your answer, download the app but I wouldn't suggest to start taking everyone's picture.

I wish I had taken notes on about 5 regs in my room when i played as a pro, sort of just to reiterate in my brain certain things (never bluffs, 3bets linear 10%, cbet 100% frequency)

I think having a few key identifiers like that might be somewhat useful. Its easy to get caught up in a session and call down a tight player bc his line makes no sense or you are at the top of your range but if you had a reminder in your phone that Jesus Dave "never bluffs" you can make better exploit folds.

I wouldnt take notes on every player and I certainly wouldnt take photos of anyone. 1) thats ******ed and 2) thats an insta ban in many casinos

I would be way more worried about what the players would do to me if I got caught taking their pictures than what the house would do to me.

I'd ask why the pic and then demand to see the notes on me!

NASA used pencils at first, but switched to pens because pencil leads sometimes broke off and floated around. Floating anything is not welcome in a space capsule; floating conductors even less so. Another requirement of the writing instruments used in space is that they do not burn in a 100% oxygen atmosphere.

The Fisher Space Pen was developed independently from any space agency and is used by both NASA and the Russians.

But cool story.

Look what it takes to get someone to make post #111 in 9 years. Ima start talking about NASA more.

btw, you DID notice the 'I once read' part, which is true. There wasn't any of this lead floating around in the capsule stuff, iirc.
