I guess this is at Canbera Casino?
I'm in Newcastle for another couple of months. Maybe I should come down?
On what days do they have games? What is the rake?

Tuesday - Sunday starts at about 7:30 games will be 5/5 first and if they have enough player they will open a 2/5 Table. The 2/5 table has a max buy-in of 200, so i recommend you play the 5/5.

They have a tournament 100 buy in on Thursday night with a very bad structure it's pretty much a hyper turbo.

Went and checked it out a couple of weeks ago. It is the worst casino Ive ever seen. And there was no poker game going so promply left and wont ever be returning. Only games in canberra are on the net.;-)

i played there many years ago and the city is nice, casino is just okay but the rake made it too tough for marginal players to be able to stick around and be game starters. so it is inevitable they lose most any chances for steady action.

Move to Melbourne and play at Crown. Biggest poker room in the Southern Hemisphere and good action 24/7 365 days a year.

I don't know if the rake structure has changed or what but the poker tables now are beatable. Been playing every Thursdays Fridays and the weekends. Will start playing daily when my uni ends.

There is a home game that a local guys has started. It's very reasonable. $5/hr for food and drinks no rake, custom chips etc. pretty good game too, you can run as many times as you can and also some PLO action too

mylight if you say they are beatable what is the rake? unless the game plays very big the rake has a lot to do with that.

With your 7-card background you must have played that game when you visited.

Long gone, although one or two games a year might get up briefly. (biggest problem is untrained dealers).

If you did happen to play in the late 90's you might recall the buzz around the 7-card table when the Cambodian Ambassador wanted to play. Consigned to history now.

Folded. All gone. The convenor even when back to the Casino, cap in hand, after his 12 month suspension had elapsed, to attempt to resume playing.

CC would be wise not to lift his ban.

we did play 7 stud and holdem when i was there. i came for the major austrailian tournament that was held there. in the early 90's i think. it might have been the first one held. but dont remember the year.

we had a smaller group of gamblers but played pretty high stakes for those days.
from there i did the great ocean road and kangaroo island.

They are a far cry poker-wise from when they first opened Nov 93 and were running 24hr poker over the weekend, Ray.

They keep trimming the hours and staff. A year or two ago it was 11am-6am, then 1pm-4am and now they start 4.30pm-4am. (6 till 2 can't be too far away?)

Still no poker machines (slots). Only one in Australia without them. Local clubs (who survive through their abundance of poker machines) are too powerful as a group - unlikely for Casinos Austria (the owners) to ever offer sufficient trinkets to the ACT Govt to ever get them.

They will struggle to survive beyond 18 months IMO. Change of management and smashing the staff bottlenecks and bring in new blood, new enthusiasm, new ideas etc. might turn it around - but I don't think the owners are that bright.

Might just change hands sooner rather than later. Looks to be the only way out - I don't think they are currently running in the black (and live in hope rather than actually doing something radical).

Any poker in Canberra besides the casino these days? Rake seems absolutely absurd at the casino.

Nope. In Australia, there's one casino per state/territory and that's it for live legal poker. If you're looking for home games, check the Home Poker forum.
