Why are players afraid of bluffing?

What is it in human psychology that makes people unwilling to bluff for large sums of money?
Just natural risk aversion ? Irrational evaluation of ev of a bluff? That is overvaluing the impact of a failed bluff versus the gain from a suscessful bluff?
