I'm currently in a three month long downswing and this is making me irritable. Couple more months of this and I might have some broken things in my apartment. My plays are pretty consistent when I check my stats so I know it's variance. So what is the best thing to tell yourself to not get so irritable? Variance is a biiitttccchhhh perhaps?

I think you're already on the right path by evaluating your game - ultimately at the end of this you should be a stronger player. Other then that I really don't have any advice, I've had downswings but never over three months (heaven forbid) - Not trying to rub it in just letting you know I really have nothing more to add other then keep doing what you're doing and maybe even take a week or two off to relax and come back to the tables with your absolute A game.

Currently in my first 20k hand breakeven stretch (50NL) for the last month or so. I can see this going on forever though, but at the same time I can see it ending just around the corner since I've improved drastically. At least I can laugh at all of these donks who post on here complaining about one bad beat or a "terrible" 5k hand breakeven stretch.

50 buyins. one and a half month period, I assume it was because I was learning a new game though and it wasn't just pure variance. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Also had a 20 buyin downswing at hu, and couldn't take the heat from that game anymore.

2 months about 50k hands, it wasnt variance though it was just that I was playing to many tables and learning about three betting light which caused tons of spew.

you shouldnt break even at 50nl for 20k hands. if you do then its not because your running bad....

No i think this is doable. I have done it and know of one other who has done it and we can both beat 100+nl for 5bb/100+ lifetime. Obviously shouldnt happen often mind you.

huh? I'm by all means no donk, but yeah there a few bad plays in there. If I can get a poker EV graph on PT3 I'd show you. Currently in the middle of +9 BI heater btw

This is not debatable guys. You can get good enough to never see this breakeven stretch at 50, please trust me on this. Excuses will just hold you back.

My longest (in 400K hands of NL25 to NL1000) was 13 buy-ins at NL400 to 600... a couple weeks of breakeven, maybe 12-15k hands. About half of those were tilt and completely avoidable.

12 buy ins at 1/2 NLH and it was so sick...Last about a month, but luckily enough won a MTT at the end of the month which balanced out things a bit, both financially and the luck factor.

I agree with raze. If you are running even close to what you are playin those limits there will be some serious leaks in your game. You may be getting unlucky, but even still you should be making enough when you arent getting unlucky to stop such a big swing. Hope it changes soon

So if I'm down 18 BIs in all-in luck over 20k hands and can't manage to break even it's definitely bad play? What if I got coolered for another 5-10 BIs?

Get rid of that all-in luck crap. How is obsessing over bad luck going to help your game?

Clearly my reason for posting was to show how blanket statements like the one I quoted were not to be taken seriously, and how it is very possible to play well and still do worse than break even over a tiny sample of 20,000 hands.

On Feb. 23/08 I had 75k less than I did Dec. 9/07. That sucked bad. I questioned a lot of things. Contemplated walking away. But then over the following 45 days I went on the sickest upswing by far in my career. Why? Because I put my foot down and said enough is enough, I'm gonna beat these games. No more excuses. That long drawn-out period ended up establishing me as a much better player than I ever was.

My largest was 1 month followed by 1 month breakeven stretch.

Good Luck
