Hi,

I've been playing online for a little less than a year now.. At first I was only playing in MTTs and SNGs.. I had very small expectations, meaning that I was doing it mainly just to have fun and work on my game.. Profits were not my main concern.. Then, in the beginning of 2010, I had a few good cashes in MTTs and decided to start playing cash games as my bankroll was now large enough for them.. I also thought (and still do) that cash games were more profitable in the long run than MTTs..

That's when I started taking poker more seriously; I studied books, hand histories, bought HEM, got rakeback etc.. I thought I was ready to tackle this new challenge that was shorthanded cash games..

Only thing is, I never thought it would require such an amount of patience and emotional control.. I honestly didn't think that being a good poker player requested more than just good mathematical and hand-reading abilities..

Now whenever I play I'm not enjoying it.. It just seems to me that I'm playing my cards and nothing else, making very bad decisions, not taking notes, being very frustrated by the cards and the players.. It's as if I was continually on tilt.. What frustrates me even more is that I consider myself a fairly good poker player (I'm still in the black after all) and, although I certainly do not feel entitled to win, I know I can do much better..

For now I have stopped playing until I find a way to get back on the right way..

Any suggestions as to how I can better control myself would be very appreciated..

Stop playing is the best thing you can do at this point. Take time off, do something else, and come back to the game when you have an itch to start playing again. If you are not dependent upon the money, there is little point in happy a hobby you dont enjoy so just stop playing. If you feel the need to come back to the game you will bring a fresh perspective, and if you dont feel the need to come back then perhaps you have just exhausted your initial interest.

As regards emotional control, it was just a matter of practice and experience. the more hands you see, the more bad beats, downswings, and bad luck you endure, the more you become used to the daily swings and roundabouts. If poker was just a game of maths and hand reading, it would be a far easier game and far more people making money from it

Poker can be very stressful. If you find yourself constantly on tilt, you are probably burnt out. Take some time off completely, and don't come back until you have process to prevent burnout in the future.

Every serious player gets sick of poker from time to time. Time off is the only remedy.

Allright, thanks guys for your sound advice.. really appreciated..

For the next two weeks, I won't do anything poker-related.. I'll be reevaluating my position only after these two weeks, as I think I can't ignore the fact that I'm actually burnt out of poker right now and it would be catastrophic for myself (and my bankroll) to go out and play.. In fact, I'm lucky enough to still have a bankroll after all the stupid stuff I did (that's because of bankroll management).

This is gonna be my longest time without poker ever since I started playing.. Hopefully it can give me a new perspective on my approach to the game..

Yeah this is a very good article, thanks.. Definitely liked the "perspective" thing in there..

I think I have dramatically improved my tilty situation over the last few days.. Basically, I've been doing a lot of exercise, which have made me less stressed (personally, I think this has a HUGE impact on my game).. I've also been trying to identify situations that are "tilt-prone" for me so that whenever I'd sense the slightest feel of tilt creeping up, I'd just quit.. And I'd quit NOW!

Also, taking a break from poker works wonders.. I did not play poker for the last week or so (I used to play everyday) and yesterday I decided to hit the felt after a little workout (my only session since my break started).. man, it's been my best session ever on Full Tilt!! But this is not the most important.. What's most important is that, during this session, I was enjoying playing poker again..

Hopefully I'll be able to keep it that way and play my best game.. I'll be monitoring my feelings during my sessions in order to avoid getting tilted and I'll be doing a lot of exercise too (this I think has had a tremendous positive impact on my situation)..

Until next time,

Same for me..and my hourly is more now than it has ever been, but I lack motivation lately because it's like I kind of completed the goal I was aiming for. Looking for something to motivate me at the moment because I hardly played this month...I'm just going to not force myself and when I get the itch to play I'll set a higher goal.

wow nice post I find myself in the sameeee position... banned myself from stars because I was always tilting... and I did not ask anyone about it because I had just been telling myself that all I needed was to play less such as only when I really feel like playing or also just set goals for stats expectations etc

very interesting thread... I mean... when u look at really really good players... (aside from rakeback pros), I look at phil galfons accounts and thats how I see that he studied/reviewed way more than he played...

I'd like to add that me too I been excerising and spending a lot of time outside doing activies and its really helped my mind a whole lot... nice post again thx

If you aren't crushing a level after 50k hands, I'd advice you to move down. Shorthanded games, especially at lower limits, is very crushable.

Time off is great, the best.

Planning a good schedule is helpful as well. I know it's not for everyone, but I enjoy poker more when I use time optimally. Plus, burnout becomes less of an issue.

Only read the title-- Just take a break. A week, a month, whatever. Never let yourself be in a position where you feel obligated to play cards.

If you're playing less then a year than you've got still a lot to work on your game. Poker is really hard to do it as a job and taking breaks to avoid burnouts is just one little piece in the puzzle. My small piece of advice is: 1)Evaluate the situation 2)Make a good plan (playing, analyzing, studying, breaks from the game...) 3)Remain positive (because poker is really stressful in the long run and any kind of negativity is gonna cost you) 4)Think big picture (you're a winner)

Good luck!

You really need to just take a break. Go off the grid for a week or a month, when I say that I mean stay off your computer go outside, with friends, etc. You are realizing that playing for a living has become less fun and more like a.... job. Everyone needs a vacation from their job every once and a while.
