Well, I didn't mean common in the sense that everyone goes on ridiculous heaters where they turn a couple hundo into 60K before giving it back. I meant common in the sense that a lot of people will continue moving up limits with ridiculous speed until they lose all their money, giving themselves basically no chance due to their lack of BR management. And a lot of people that play high stakes have absoutely no business there because they can't afford to take the losses that would come due to random variance. Better?

HIV's story is a pretty common one.
I just can't shake the feeling that this statement is way off...
It's a pretty common story when it comes to pathological gamblers. And while many poker players do not consider poker to be gambling (for various reasons), for someone like HIV it most certainly *is* gambling.
Oh...well being that these; "pathological gamblers"; tend to be uncommon then I have no probs with the statement now...

"It's pretty common for people's limbs to just fall off."
"Whaaa?"
"I mean for lepers, it's pretty common."

I suspect that this will be just a moment of severe disappointment in a lengthy side--or full-- career for you. FEW PEOPLE have any maturity or stability in the testosterone crazed years between 18 and 21. Those hands and history may well lay a foundation for a great player in the years to come. There's no reason not to be more optimistic at your age. Buck up my brother!
Winner.

I have 200$ in the bank and $10 in my wallet. I owe $2K to my friend and I don't quite know how to tell my parents and my girlfriend, who will be devastated.

I'm jealous. I might have a few K online for grinding, but I never have ANY money in the bank and owe about 5K on CC. You're not in any kind of trouble at all. BTW, your girlfriend will be 'devestated' cos you only have $200, what kind of shallow bitch is that?

You're a good example for the politicians. Until you learn self-control, please stay away from the tables.

Most of us can relate, at least a little. I know I've lost self-control on table games. Wasn't pretty. Ever seen anyone lose 15 out of 16 hands in casino war raising the bet incrementally? Not a good day. If the casino didn't comp. my room for the entire week it would have been a tragedy. Try to find pride in the ability to have self-control and proper money management and you'll be fine. You're still in college, anything is possible.

Unforunately, I think he'll get the itch to play for much smaller stakes though he'll probably be doing this at some frat house. Tell someone to get him Greenstein's book. If he wises up, maybe he'll end up telling the world about this one day in a book too.

People don't receive unemployment if they are fired for cause.

I despise the nanny state, but arguments like yours end up seeming coarse, uneducated and moronic. Mostly because they are.

~4 Month since this post; update.

I am going to be taking some time off from school.

I still find it amazing to go back and read this post and see where I was at less than half a year ago. Things can change so

I've learned a ton and feel I'm wise beyond my years. the most important thing I've lerned though is that i still have SO MUCH to learn.

However, I have actually developed self control, I think. Although I still lose it at times, I have gotten a lot better. I think I can actually be a winning player, but only time will tell.

It is just invaluable to read this post, I still read it at least once a month, and it puts everything into perspective.

I also feel this entire thread is sort of a personal poker journal for me, with other people's thoughts interspersed as well.

Take care, I hope I have become humbler as a person since I wrote this. I know re-reading sure makes me feel humbler.

Honestly, I don't believe you have good self control, for an untirely unrelated reason to the rest of this thread.

Poker isn't going anywhere. Your ability to get a college education is.

It's very hard to leave school and come back. Finish school, play in your spare time, and decide what to do after that.
