How to stop punting for no good reason? How to stop punting for no good reason?

I don't know if it's boredom, naivety, or outright stupidity but I often throw away good runs in online No limit poker tourneys with short moments of insane irrationality. I'm only a beginner and play 1-3$ tournies and I'm not doing this to win money but to improve my patience and making +EV moves. Ironically it's exactly that which fails me. I've improved a lot from only about 1-2 months of play but I still sometimes do such stupid moves that I can't comprehend it.

Making mistakes is one thing but a lot of the time that I bust is because I do stupid all ins where I know I have much worse cards. Like I'll have KQs on BB, chip leader will bet 3-5BB out of playing tight in UTG position so very likely has better hand than me and i'll go all in when I still have a big stack and no real reason to do that. And this would happen after 2-3 hours of playing relatively well and 'maturely' before ruining it all.

Sometimes you get in a bad position and anger can make you do silly stuff but usually when that happens I actually recover well because the anger wakes me up and I cut my losses. Often I tend to even play better after that. It's when I'm calm and cruising along that I sometimes do rushed all ins like the above.

Anyone else get this? Any suggestions on how to stop doing it? I once told myself, it's a 1$ tourney, lets never call or bet more than 50% of my stack as an extreme solution, for practise... I broke my rule a couple of hands later.

I've heard this ability described as having the heart of a champion. All it really is is having the discipline to stick to what you know is right. So, I'm really reading your question as: how do I behave the way I know I should behave?

I suggest that you find a place to write down what you did that you felt was wrong and what you were feeling when you went against your own best judgment. Make sure it's a private place, no one else should ever be able to see it. I think MS Word and Open Office have the ability to encrypt files, so if you can enter and edit privately, that might work.

Be brief, a sentence or two should be enough. Just enough for you. Then, after each addition, re-read the previous entries.

Be honest with yourself in what you write. Remember, no one else will ever see it - and never share it! This is for you, by you. If you seek validation from others, then you're letting others' judgment supplant yours - which defeats the purpose. This is not to say that you can't ask others questions, or discuss things.

Then, keep it up for a minimum of a year, preferably 4-5.

I think writing things down is a great idea and you got my question exactly right - worded it better than I could. I've already started a word doc with two occasions that I know sometimes trigger these impulses.

At least I'm playing online, can't imagine how I would be live where play is much slower right now.

Thanks for your reply

Well, on the one hand, live is slower, on the other, there is a lot more to see (and in some cases to filter out).

There is a couple things you could do:
First of all(and most important): Improve your game. If you keep improving your game you will eventually improve your "Unconscious Competence" which basically means you won't even think about those punts.
Second: Improve your mental game, read books like The Mental Game of Poker, Tilt Amour and so on
Third: Try improving your focus! If you are studying for instance.. put away ANYTHING that might distract you. Do not look at your phone, don't surf on YouTube.. don't even look around in your room. Try just focusing on what you do. Go for 30 minutes.. next time for more.. and them some more and more.. your focus will improve and you won't be easly distracted and therefore play your best game.
If you are playing.. play less tables. Pick a player or two and watch every hand they are playing (to keep your mind occupied)!
When breaks come, take them! Get some fresh air, move around!
