How can we get more stoic at the table and less reactive/tilty? How can we get more stoic at the table and less reactive/tilty?

How do we not let our emotions be cattle prodded by luck and results? I like winning but long periods with no "real" wins can put me into a depressed state. I want poker to be not painful hehe. Any ideas about how one can work with their own mind so as to stop being affected by results so much? I would guess that it can't be eradicated completely no matter what you do. Everyone wants to win. But I think that extraneous emotional pain that is self generated could be avoided.

I know from my own study in psychology that taking a stoic mentality instead of a victim mentality can lead to much more acceptance of adversity. It seems that I, apparently, have not molded my mind well enough in this regard since I get tilted at least a few times a week from suck outs, bad luck, and constant aggression toward myself. I want to improve in this regard. I want to be able to take repeated punches with grace and not find myself sighing and feeling down since it leads to passive play or too much risk taking. Any thoughts on things we can do to be more stoic and less reactive?

One wishes to be rid of suffering w.r.t. poker.

Rather than 'how'; rather than try to jump to a 'solution' why not go into the problem. What is tilt?

It's incredibly valuable to go into this for yourself. And then you may find the below thread of value.

1) Read some stoic philosophy.

2) Put some quotes/affirmations in your phone and review them throughout your sessions.

3) Think about a poker player who demonstrates the qualities you want to possess. Use that person as a role model. Make an effort to act like that person at the table.

talk to yourself about it, read about it, breathe slowly and calmly, take walk breaks, don't resist that the problem exists (sounds like you are doing well on that) ... formulas for change involve candid acceptance and education, then evolution

Getting more experience and one feels good at times when one used to react more negatively in the past. Understanding the variance and knowing the winrates of winning players -- there is a lot to know here, so don't think you already know it if you still have the same issues. If one doesn't have unrealistic expectations and has confidence in the long run, there is little to be upset about. Following the technique is another "stoic" aspect.

Meditation, you lack self discipline with your emotions. Think of meditation as weight lifting for you emotions. Right you now your emotions are like a couch potatoe with ***** tits. Now get to training.

Also psychology and psychiatry are a joke, I would have gone into that area of study in college but 10 years with them and years of study has shown me that these "sciences" are a huge joke. Their results are pathetic when it comes to dealing with mental disease. The next phase of working with mental health is neuroplastic training regimens like the one I suggested.

In order to have something, you need to truly want it.

Is stoicism a nice to have thing for you? If so, you'll never have it.

If it is something that you desperately want to be part of you, you will figure out how to get there.

Read the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, it's short and brilliant, nothing makes one more stoical than playing a lot of poker

Would poker be painful if you lost money in 2/4c games? That is, when the outcome has far less meaning?? If so, I'd suggest you are playing too high.

The other likely explanation is you're not a winning player. This problem is harder to resolve if you want to play poker for money.

Create a yoga discipline that includes mediation. Live on the edge of what you are comfortable with and relax into it; either 10 percent harder or 10 percent easier (just don't stagnate). remember to breath, relax, feel, watch and allow life to happen.

If you aren't into the physical postures of yoga than just go to the gym. When you lift weights you have to breath and relax and feel the muscles tightening, you watch how your muscles feel and make adjustments until you find your EDGE and then you allow the sensation to pass through you. Tilt is worrying about something that happened in the past. Try to live in the present moment.
