For most they are seeking an escape from present reality, if they know this consciously or not. In much the same way a hardcore drug addict seeks escape from reality.
One time recently, just yesterday in fact, I played with a total degen from years ago. I noticed him sobbing in the bathroom presumably over losses in a mid stakes game I was playing with. He worked at the cage. And I told one of his coworkers that you have to do something, because he was dead money and was in way over his head. He was an addict. I also think he's kinda stupid. Played with him yesterday, still at it, still an idiot, still has the disease, and it's like ten years later.
A fool and his money are soon departed.
