Does anyone have experience with being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and being prescribed cognitive enhancers to help with focus? If so, how did it impact your poker game? I don't have ADHD, this is more of just an interesting informational type question.

It's got nothing to do with the ADHD (you know, whatever), but I do take caffeine pills (special w/ no jitters) to finish off the last 25% of a session. I don't notice a huge difference.

Well, you must notice SOME difference otherwise you wouldn't do it, right? Does it make you sharper or just help keep you awake or something else?

I do notice a jolt of energy from the caff without the jitters drawback. It's like an espresso, which I previously stopped taking because of the crash.

Have anyone tried a different cognitive enhancer other than caffeine?

Caff not really a cog enhancer, more a cns stimulant. Tried Piracetam, seemed to work, you could see it in the ROI curves.
Used to multi 6max sngs and Red Bull made the hugest difference. You're locked in while they're waning, kerching.

Cool!, did u use Piracetam or Red bull when being tired? Did u notice any effects if u were already fully awake?

That's an interesting question.
You know when you have a dirty glass and you give it a good wash? That's kind of what Piracetam feels like, just this kind of clarity. It did do ok in some 'normal people' tests but the biggest effects were on people with brain deficiencies due to eg Alcoholism.
I damaged my knee once and had to go for keyhole surgery. I was kinda paranoid about drug interactions with the anaesthetic so I took in my tub of Piracetam and the anaesthetist looked at it and goes 'Stop taking this stuff'. Probably just a poker reg trying to knock out the competition
I think there are individual differences when it comes to cognition and tiredness. I take tiredness badly, especially for poker. Tiredness+intense poker+caffeine = bad, for me. Just dumb moves like before, but now with nervosity and twitchiness, fab!
Caffeine when normal though, just had the biggest effect. I felt like it gave the hugest edge in the crucial late stages in sngs, all that bullying and intense focus/tell work. You're just locked in, clear, attentive.
If I get deep deep in a big mtt I always hit the caffeine, no matter what.
GTO guys now be like 'you know what you know about poker, you're kidding yourself about caffeine changing things'. But that's how it feels to me.
As an aside, booze makes my game just terrible.

Poker will increase alertness instantly when sitting at the table (or even watching if it is personal, because of fear).

I use caffeine pills regularly more in other gaming, although also in poker, so I don't have to drink as much coffee. I drink B-vitamin (among some other stuffs like C, D especially in winter, magnesium, calsium), in the morning. Energy drinks are caffeine + B-vitamin.

The medicines for intelligence or so are supposed to be those used for adhd, narcolepsy and alzheimer, but they are not for intelligence. But a test done for 39 top chess players in Germany (in 2017, I think) did increase their cognitive abilities (when not under time pressure); they used Modafinil (narcolepsy, ADHD; when trying to keep one awake) and Methylphenidate (central nervous system stimulant, used for ADHD, ADD).

What the effects on the negative side are in the long run, is unknown. The normal recommendations for improving ability are sleep and exercise; fitness.

On the more drug side there are the cokes and related drugs (starting from ephedrine, that is not on the official most recommended list, although used some, and is officially good for human consumption -- that is not the case with many drugs and pills one can get up to legally -- and in smaller doses legal in South Africa), and a whole bunch of more, as the chemists are making new ones regularly, and they might be legally sold in some shops in some countries like in New Zealand still perhaps (even with the label of not for human consumption), and one can order them (and other pills) from some websites and it is generally legal -- including in the EU generally and the labs and/or marketing can also be in EU in that case e.g. in Spain -- even if on the grey area, but they are not on the list of illegal drugs yet, but they are not recommeded even for human consumption, and so less so for more regular use.

I used to enjoy the odd cup of tea or coffee when I played, although I was careful not to take this to excess.

It would be interesting to RCT this with caffeine pills/placebo/coffee/decaf coffee to get an idea whether it is the satisfying feeling of a hot drink or caffeine per se that provides greater focus or clarity.
