If it all turns out not to be a bug or mistake in coding (and I am leaning towards it wasn't). While I can't agree with all of this, what I think I hear you saying and agree completely with is:
Global should have made an announcement about these changes at least when they made them if not preferably before. Not a good look on Global, in my opinion.
An email to all players explaining the changes would have been a very good PR move, (could have pimped the Christmas updates as well) and if this was all for security for the site, that would have been good PR too.
