Payouts in tournaments w late reg Payouts in tournaments w late reg

Joey/Kimber - I am playing the Sunday Teaser and the number of people registered has gone from 90 to 150 (and counting) since the tournament started but the number of people getting paid has not changed from 15. That doesn't seem right...

Hi sao,

I will see what I can find out.

However, I just had a look and can see that all of the prize pool is being paid out so I believe it is all ok.

Thanks

Joey,

Thanks for looking into this.

The issue is not whether all of the prize pool is being paid out; it is how many people the pool is getting paid to. A tournament with 90 people in it usually will pay 12 or 15 people, while a tournament with 188 (which is what I believe the Teaser ended up with after late reg closed) would usually pay 27 or so.

It looks like the part of the software that adjusts the payouts based on how many people are in the tournament was not updated when late reg was introduced so it is locking in the payout structure when the tournament starts, rather than when late reg ends and the final number of participants is established. As a result, late reg tournaments are paying out to fewer people than non-late reg tournaments with the same number of runners.

I assume this unintended as it discourages folks from registering late, as they see that only the top 7% are getting paid, instead of the top 15%.

The 7% are getting paid a lot more than normal. Mini-cash in the $100 is over $400. I guess some people like it more and some people like it less. Always good to have some variety.

Please DONT change this. Global payout schedule pays too many spots which is “good for recs”’in that they like getting ITM, but is bad for everyone—including the recs— because flat payout structures mean lower achievable roi and thus less people can actually profit long term. (This is good for the site bc it keeps money churning and thus raking)

Steep payout scales mean a higher achievable roi for everyone. You should prefer schedules that pay 10-12% of the field which is effectively what you get here: 15-18 payouts in a 150–190 person field if 90-100 were regged at start.

FWIW several good regs have known about this ever since they put late reg on the $110 Sunday tourney and purposefully reg a couple minutes after start to take advantage.

I don't follow your logic.

If fewer people get paid more money in each tournament, the money in the system more rapidly flows from the recs to the regs. Casual players go broke faster because they cash less often and they get discouraged more quickly, when they go 5, 10, 15 tournaments without a cash. Fewer recs, smaller fields, less money in the system, smaller ROIs (and fewer winning players).

I am fine with 10-12% payout structures. But how it is now, the payouts are often more like 7 or 8%, which I think is too small and not consistent with Global's rec friendly philosophy.

But really regardless of what I would prefer, I just want to know whether this is an intentional plan by Global or just something that the programmers missed when they modified the software to allow late reg.

Based on experience with Global's growing pains over the last year and a half I'd estimate a 99.9% chance the programmers just missed it, in fact it's quite likely no one thought to look at this as they don't seem to have an experienced poker player on staff to consult with.

It should definitely be fixed in the interest of keeping the site attractive to recs.
