Does Surge Run? Does Surge Run?

Do games get going in the evening between 6-10 ever?

When the game mode was launched they ran regularly. However, Global's implementation has bugs and missing features compared to other sites, so interest tapered off. The last time I checked regularly the games were running only intermittently.

In case anyone is interested, the bugs I saw were:
  1. Auto top-up was uncapped. Instead of stopping at the configured value or table max, the amount in play was increased every hand regardless of stack size
  2. Player notes were not displayed
The "fold and stay" feature (common on other sites) doesn't exist here, and the limitations of a browser-based site are especially noticeable in the fast-fold format.

Thanks for the note.

I've hopped on only twice in hopes of playing, only to find no one at any stake. Bummer.

Global doesn't really have enough traffic for that format to run.

people hollered and clamored for surge....mayB before it was reimplemented it ran sometimes but i dont remember it being popular on GP...people worried it would take away from $ games and i didnt think it would cuz its a "fold til the cows come home nit reg fest" type game mode...even tho thas my opinion on the format i still want it to exist and do enjoy rippin thro hands sometimes...

think a fast fold turbo mtt is more interesting and might pull some people over to the cash format...

i think they got the traffic but lack incentive to play this format without rakeback or some point system ect... and whats the point of attracting that crowd to the site?

mayB run a happy hour with rake free surge games...popup in lobby saying for the next 57min surge games are blah blah blah...

even if surge sits empty most times id rather have the option to play it than not...

They still haven't fixed the bugs that were reported months ago when they were asking for people to test it in their discord. Also for reasons I don't really understand, they seem determined to only open Surge during the 4 hour evening window. What's the harm in leaving it open 24/7? There have been numerous times where I've been looking to play a short (30 min or so) fast fold session during the afternoon and I would play those on Global if they ran, but they don't even have the option to run since they aren't open... so I play those sessions on other sites.

I think Surge would run and would not have a tangible impact on the rest of the cash games, but for that to happen they will have to 1) fix the bugs/issues brought up months ago in testing, 2) leave it open all day, and 3) run some promotions to encourage people to play some Surge.

Love the idea of Surge MTT's and would play those regularly if they ever get to a point they can offer them, but that may be a ways down the road in terms of programming (and there's more pressing programming needs both with surge and other games).

FYI re: No "fold and stay" option, this was one of the things asked for at every stage of their beta testing. For now there is a work around though... if you let yourself time out, your hand will be folded and you'll stay at the table instead of being moved to a new one. It's annoying to your opponents who have to wait for you to time out, but it's not like this is something players do every hand, only once in a while when an interesting pot has developed and they want to see how it plays out.

I don't play on Global anymore since they utterly failed to handle PR after the banning disaster, so I have no dog in this fight. However, I may be able to provide a partial answer.

Quote:

The first reason is to artificially build interest in the same way fast food chains roll out certain low-quality sandwiches or desserts only at certain times of year. If those items were on the menu all the time, nobody would care because they are poor quality. However, when the company builds artificial scarcity into their product, they exploit a bug in the human psyche that makes us want rare things. It didn't really work in the case of Global's Zoom, but it's a commonly-used tactic.

The other reason may have a technical and financial basis: A lot of systems run on rented, dynamically-created servers these days. Major websites can automatically spin up more peer servers during peak traffic times and spin them down when traffic subsides to save money. If Global's infrastructure runs on dynamic servers, they can save on operating costs by spinning down the unused ones for several hours per day.

I don't expect official answers from Global about the reasons because they proved that they can't even keep accounts safe or assure people that their balances will be available, so these are simply reasonable guesses.
