Hello,

Some time ago, my roommate and I were playing a friendly game of heads-up NL Holdem to decide who would be doing the dishes for the next month and this very interesting hand came up:

My holdings: 9c8c - Straight Flush
Roommate holdings: AcKc - Royal Flush

Flop: 10cJcQc

I am curious to know what the odds of this happening are - I looked around on the web but could not find the answer for myself. It was pretty bizarre, and sadly, I was forced to do the dishes for the month.

To be more specific with my question, what are the odds of my opponent holding the Royal Flush when I have the under Straight Flush? Any other random probabilities/odds within the subject would be cool to know as well. Thanks!

Zwank

There are many interpretations to these kinds of questions. I’ll answer the one I think you are asking – the chances your opponent will have a royal flush when you have 89c and the flop is TJQc. That means he must have AcKc.

There is only one way for him to have AcKc. There are 47 unknown cards so there are C(47,2) = 1081combinations of hands he might have. Therefore the probability of him having AcKc is the ratio or 1/1081 or 0.000925 or 1080 to 1 against.

Note this is nowhere near the really small probability of this happening for all three events – your holding, his and the flop.

Happy Dishwashing!

If you can't spot the sucker at the table after flopping a straight flush losing to a royal flush...

This is the what I would like to know! The probability of all 3. Any idea what that would be?

"Smells" like a "fix". The probability for you to get 98 suited, the opponent to get AK suited and the flop to come down to give both of you straight flushes is (4/1326)(1/1225)(1/17296) = 1 / 7 023 689 400 or 7023689399 to 1 against.

Did you at least "cut the cards" ?

The same exact thing literally just happened to me today playing online but it was Hearts not clubs and I of course was the one with 9-8 of hearts and lost a big pot. It didn't make me angry though I just thought it was insane. But yesterday I ended up hitting a Royal Flush on the river (first time ever getting a Royal Flush) and beating a full house so I guess it goes both ways.

I was wondering what the odds of that happening we're also and is how I stumbled upon your post. I think the most unlikely thing to ever happen is Quads vs Royal Flush it's like 1- 2.5 billion. I know at my casino they give you over $100 grand if you are on the losing end of it. I think other casinos might even offer more then that.

To be clear, typically bad beat jackpots are split. As an example, the one time I was sitting when one hit, 50% went to the guy holding quad jacks, 25% to the man holding a king-high straight flush, and the remaining 6 of us at the table chopped the remaining 25%. [/derail]
