i am very interested in momentum and have done alot of work but my math skills aren't really high level

i tried to cut/paste some stuff from the article here but it didn't come out very nicely

basically the concept is that small amounts of autocorrelation over and over monthly (could be any term) add up to potentially significant momentum over time.... i have certainly seen this myself..... partially complicated by what type of momentum (time series, cross-sectional etc.)

the hard core math i will try to figure out myself but what i don't understand is this:

r_{t+1} = b * dp_{t} + \epsilon_{t+1}^{r}
dp_{t+1} = \phi dp_{t} + \epsilon_{t+1}^{dp}

r (t+1) = b *dp(t) + e(t+1)r
dp(t+1) = a*dp(t) + e(t+a)dp

the way i wrote it is confusing. original document is good....... AREN'T R and DP similar or same thing? at most, price return vs. total return

thanks in advance
