Or whatever you call the type of rebuy event where you can rebuy anytime you are at or below starting stack

vs the type where you have to be felted to rebuy?

In my experience (mostly live tournaments in local casinos, which include daily and weekly tournaments, as well as casino run series and WPT, WSOPc, PNIA, CardPlayer, etc circuit events), most tournaments are re-entry tournaments, with the occasional rebuy tournament. Very few are freezeouts.

At a guess, I would say that re-entry tournaments outnumber rebuy tournaments by a 5 to 1 or 10 to 1 ratio.

OK thanks I guess that's the distinction I'm looking for, re-entry vs rebuy

So re-entry you have to be busted before you can rebuy? And rebuy is you can start with 2x chips if you choose?

Re-entry = may re-enter as many times as you like during the registration period. Must be eliminated to re-enter.

Freezeout = no re-entry or rebuy, when you are eliminated, you are out of the tournament

Re-buy = May rebuy any time your stack is at or below starting levels. Usually there is an add-on at the end of registration.

Re-buy's are interesting, because some people will play very loose, treating the tournament as if the effective buy in was several times larger than the actual buy in. Often times, rebuy tournaments feed that perception by having low single buyin starting stacks. For example, you might see a rebuy tournament with a starting stack of 4,000, with starting blinds at 25\50. This encourages everyone to buy in at twice at the start, or else they will start off short. There are also those people who will take advantage of the very lose play by buying in only once, and then trying to double up the first time they have a pocket pair, knowing that people are calling wide. These tournaments are fun but sloppy.

Rebuys are not super common. You can look at the schedules for past series, and you will see maybe a couple of rebuy tournaments, but the vast majority are re-entry

OK thank you very much. It appears I got the terminolgy wrong then

So in a Re-entry tournament, I'm assuming you DO get charged the entire Vig to buy in again? So if its a $120 nightly at Harrahs, you're paying the full $120 right?

Also - in a re-entry tournament, you typically leave your seat and draw for a new one which may be at a different table. In a rebuy tournament you'll usually stay in your seat and buy chips from the dealer or a floor.

There are various types of add-ons, sometimes only available when you enter, sometimes when you are below a certain stack size, sometimes at the end of the re-entry period.

Most casinos have moved away from add-ons and rebuys that you buy at the table. Having floors handle all that untracked cash was too tempting and many kept it for themselves.

My current article in Card Player is about rebuy and reentry tournaments, and is the first of a 4 part series on that subject. You can find the current article, and my past articles, at this link: https://www.cardplayer.com/authors/456-greg-raymer

Thanks you're right about everything here probably, I hadn't really considered the buying in at the table part being a hassle though so that explains that, thanks

I feel like there used to be more re-buy tournaments with an add-on and that they've kinda been getting rarer and now not only do they seem to have been replaced with re-entry tournaments, but it seems to me like a large amount of the tournaments now are re-entry tournaments.
