Opponent is reasonably smart but can easily be leveled. I think he thinks I'm always being honest with him, which is almost always true (we can argue the morality of lying to someone you don't like personally.)

On the river I check. We've been talking throughout the hand, mostly me asking him how he's feeling. He knows I don't like him but the truth is he's not as terrible a person as I pretend he is .

He has 170 behind. He grabs 125 and I quickly grab 125 and show it to him. He grabs 25 more, and so do I. Finally he grabs it all and shoves. What should I do?

Acting like you are going to call is a pretty strong tell that you don't want the other guy to bet.

What should you do? Call if you are going to win at showdown, fold if you are going to lose at showdown..

Assume I beat all his bluffs and none of his value.

Well if he thinks you are honest and always gonna call then he has to have a value hand does he not?

Players posturing while I am considering my action (making a show of how big their chips are, and how eager they are to get those chips into the pot) are a moderately reliable weakness tell. That is fine if you were leveling, and preening with actual strength. But against a decent player, this is a pretty poor way of showing strength. In my opinion, against a decent player, your actions adds a few more bluffs to his range.

That's reasonable too You're probably right in most situations like this, but I don't think he thinks I'm stupid enough to always use a tell straightforwardly.

The reason that kind of confusing action on your part is bad is because you are leveling yourself more than you are leveling the villain (since you are the one making the ultimate decision if the villain does bet).

I couldn't call, I was just seeing what would happen and trying to figure out what it meant.

In the op you said he always thinks you're being honest with him, which one is it?

Being honest when I speak, obviously. Theatricality and deception are powerful agents.

Oh dam I forgot to add this hehe! But you see what I'm saying?

You can't claim he always thinks you're honest but at the same time say "I'm testing to see if he thinks I'm full of crap"

Tell me what I'm missing

That's the thing. Everybody is always like "they couldn't use that tell because they don't know if I was just faking it" but in reality they are honest with it the majority of time.

I am not saying you used a tell, I am saying that your actions were a tell. As soon as he showed strength, you folded, indicating that your posturing was, in fact, a tell.

I don't see this very much, but when I see a guy this interested in showing me he is going to call he is VERY interested in just a showdown and I tend to increase my bet.

I have a few regs that will 'suggest' my bet size by grabbing some chips before action is on them. I don't want to say this is collusion, but it sure smells of it since they are really telling me to keep it small .. they got this one and lets work on the rest of the table not just our stacks!! GL

I am honest in what I say but am certainly allowed to use deception..

I prefer the fake like you are going to muck your cards move 4 players before it's your turn to act....then shove with the nuts when everyone calls😊
