Sure, it's kind of like watching paint dry except paint doesn't wonder why some weirdo is staring at it, but OK. No law against it.

Lots of players, including myself, get uncomfortable if somebody stands behind them.

Sitting next to a friend who plays is OK, but I don't think it's going to be as entertaining as you picture it to be.

Like everything else, it is room dependent.

I'm going to assume you are mainly interested in tournament play. Most rooms will allow visitors to stand along the rail and watch for as long as they want. Watching live poker isn't quite as interesting as watching paint dry. I'm not sure you're going to pick up much information for as long as you can stand it.

Where do you live? We might be able to provide you with much better, more specific answers if we know which casinos/cardrooms are near you.

Never seen anybody just stand behind players and watch a game "for Hours on end"! I suppose , if nobody complained , that the room might let it stand. I doubt that it would last too long, however, without some player getting irritated and raising an objection. As long as there was no interference, likely I would quickly forget he was there and just play on. I have no idea if rooms have any strict policy about silent , non intrusive "watchers"! Probably not. Plenty of other stuff to deal with.

Also it depends on what you envision doing. You will likely be allowed to watch but you will not be permitted to stand right on top of the players or see there hole cards .... it may be difficult for you to determine what the board cards are or the amounts being bet. in some rooms the tables are so close to each other that physically may not be able to watch a table simply because there is no where for you to stand and see it.

There are lots of live streams you can watch. They all have hole cards shown, and it's often just punters playing the same ****e cards they play in your local. Stones casino or Live at the Bike, I think Bellagio also has a weekly one shown. This will probably give you the flavor you're looking for.

As long as you're far enough back that you can't see anyone's hole cards it should be fine. I do it sometimes while waiting for a seat to open up, just not for hours at a time.

Better yet, take a seat at the lowest stakes game and just be super nitty.

At my casino there are a few standing tables near the poker tables where people occasionally watch or have their girlfriend (who wants to commit suicide after 20 minutes), which is fine. People who stand right behind me and don't move after a minute get a death stare.

This is the best answer so far.
No need staying in the casino like a tree when you can do the job in front of your computer.

What kind of tells are you trying to pick up? Are you planning on playing against those players later?

Let me save you all the standing for "hours on end", it's a waste of time, and if someone was standing behind me for hours on end with a note pad I would be having a conversation with you before the end of the first hour.

It's best to go the stream route IMO. Plenty of opportunity to watch with lots of extra information available (hole cards, commentators, stats) .. and maybe even a FF option to skip between hands.

In my area you can 'rail' a cash game within reason but not a tournament area .. or at least you can't pick which tournament table to rail within the ropes and only be able to watch most tables from afar. I would guess that most cash tables would allow you to watch 3-4 hands before a lot of head turns would start to occur. GL

Actual conversation from my 8-16 LHE game from a few weeks ago:

Seat 4 to dealer: 'Call the floor.'
Seat 4 to floor: 'This guy's been standing behind me for too long. Please ask him to move.'
Floor to guy: 'Please don't stand here.'
Guy to floor: 'Tell him to go **** himself.'
Floor to guy: 'HEY!'
Seat 4 to guy: '**** you!'
Floor: 'Calm down!'
Guy: '**** him!'
Seat 4: '**** YOU!'
Floor: 'Do I have to call security?'
Guy: 'No, but **** him.'

Lovely, you should give it a try.

LOL

I love that Seat 4 couldn't see he was going to get what he wanted as soon as Guy drops the F bomb, like the only thing he had to was keep quiet and let the Floor deal with it.

It's not like all of these ppl are rational.

Couldn't seat 4 just tell the F guy directly instead of calling floor?

It's best to let the floor handle things like this just bec what happened happens distressingly often.

Yeah, the amount of butthurt and childishness you see on a daily basis never ceases to amaze me. I don't think I've ever been to the card room without seeing at least one grown man throw some kind of tantrum. I normally leave before the drinking really picks up as well. Can only imagine what 11pm is like.

I put the O/U for how often a poker floor person nationwide says 'calm down'/day at 10,000.

Sry if you were serious. I'm drunk. But srsly google live at the bike (LATB, famous stream/poker room in LA), or stones casino poker stream (in Sacramento, CA iirc) or bleeagio live stream.

opinions will vary based on your taste, but I find LATB commentators worse than useless. If Bart is doing Stones commentary, he is prob what OP was looking for, he's usually all poker talk, and will point out when he sees a betsize or timing tell.

Twitch has stones, LATB is on twitch and also YT.
