It helps to know the word in his language if you are trying to teach him what the English word is. That might happen more efficiently if you ask him, "Check or bet? [Spanish word for check] o [Spanish word for bet]?"
Saying it in English and repeating in Spanish should quell the complaints, especially given the number of cognates and loanwords that I assume exist in poker jargon, unless you have the obstinate sort who wants people to speak "American".
