Are props / side bets ever allowed? At my local they aren't, and I had a (open degen) to my right that I would've put $20 a hand on Red/Black Door Card on...

I don't know of anywhere that explicitly allows it.

I'm not sure I've seen a place where they aren't explicitly disallowed.

That doesn't stop me from making them. I'm not going to respect a stupid rule and if they have a problem with it they can tell me to take my business elsewhere.

In most places they are considered an illegal form of gambling that would put the casino's license at risk if they allowed it. They are no different than expecting a casino to allow players to bring a pair of dice and shoot craps at the table.

There are legal restrictions. Enforcement varies, some dealers will let it go once in a while, even though it's never "OK".

Personally I wouldn't care as long as the money from the prop bets isn't on the table.

Do they have table games in your casino? Sounds like you'd like roulette

Most places don’t really care if you make it for little money on the side.

Only time I’ve been explicitly told to stop was at Bellagio when we did $100 red/black in a 1/3 game and other players apparently weren’t comfortable with that for whatever reason. Floor told me in private that they aren’t allowed to let players do it, but if we kept it to a red chip max, nobody would stop us.

Playing red/black with 33 bbs is why we can't have nice things.

People play it all the time wherever I've played, but it's (a) always neighbors, (b) who know each other, (c) at an LHE table, (d) betting single chips, (e) quietly.

Also people make sports bets all the time.

Again, as long as it appears to be a small, friendly wager between two friends, nobody cares. Once it starts to look like some kind of organized bookkeeping ring with vig and a paper trail, of course it's going to get shut down.

It’s not like we used chips from our stacks, so it’s not really 33BB. Just one bill that changed hands. In hindsight we obviously should have kept the bills under the table though, that would have been the smart move. But when I feel smart, I don’t flip for $100 anyway.
