There's a command line utility called LiveStreamer that lets you view streams from sites like Twitch (and a few others) through VLC.
Once it's up and playing in VLC through the LiveStreamer command all you have to do is go to "View - > Advanced Controls" in VLC to add the extra toolbar at the bottom of the player.
Then you just hit the bright red circle/record button, and it will turn blue and start saving the stream for you (mine saves to the Documents folder as 'vlc-record-[date]-[randomstuff].ts'
I originally had it set up for saving other people's poker streams that I wanted to watch back later to look at their analysis and learn something.
Having it in place for Sticky was just a bonus.
