1) What??? I slammed her for her girlish attire/makeup at the table. You slam her for her poker demeanor at the table. But my take is bad??? Though I do have to say that a hot girl that plays high limit stakes poker and is geeky enough to dive into solver technology is pretty damn cool.
2) The implication here is that talking about salaries in the Asian is OPEN and ACCEPTED. Not gossipy talk among friends. Hell, I learn all kinds of stuff when the team goes out to drink with our manager and he has one too many drinks. Insightful info but it's done in every culture. Gossiping about numbers.
But let's unpack what it really means to openly talk about salaries in the Asian culture.
- Are salaries talked about openly at the family gatherings? Uncles/Aunts/Grandparents/Nieces/Nephews and friends/strangers. What happens when Daddy, an IT veteran professional finds out, his young daughter is now making MUCH more than him with a hot crypto startup???
- Are salaries talked about openly at the corporate workplace? Can the employees ask their manager how much he/she is making? And then ask their colleagues, out in the open with other team members listening, how much they are making???
The can of worms that is opened when people are allowed to discuss these things can range from hurt feelings to jealousy to anger to resentment. I found my girlfriend makes WAY more than me. Am I man enough to accepted that? Is that ok?
Google "gender pay disparity in asia". Asia is the same as any other culture. Women get paid less than men. This idea about being open with your salary would seem to suggest that such an open culture would base pay on merit. But Asia is the same as any other place ie men rule.
Real life scenario.
- Manager A (Executive Director, male) makes $250k-ish at a major Wall Street firm in IT. 12 year experience.
- Manager B (ED, female) reports to A makes $175k-ish. 12 year experience.
- Team Member (VP, male) reports to B makes $190k-ish. 25 year experience.
- Team Member (non-title, female) reports to B makes $140k-ish. 7 year experience.
Female team member studies really hard for a year doing Leetcode. She goes out on the tight IT labor market and gets following offer $250k (big tech firm), $340k (big crypto brokerage) and $380k (big media firm). Is the female team member that much better than every one else? No she isn't. Trust me on that. But beyond the fact it's a tight labor market causing the spike in pay (America is a BEAUTIFUL country
). Think about the consequences of letting Manager A/B and senior Team member know OPENLY about what she got offered. How about Manager B making less than Team member VP?? Major Wall Street firm starts to lose a lot of good people. Either that or they have to adjust salaries. I've seen this happened before in my career.
Now think about a similar scenario in the before mentioned family setting. How it might affect the family balance when Dad knows his daughter is making way more than him? Think about how this would play out in YOUR every day life. You find out your wife makes way more than you? You found out as a manager that you are the least paid member of the team?
These scenarios have nothing to do with just the Asian culture, as it's applicable to ANY culture.
Update: lol, and for those Asian people or otherwise who call b*llshit on my real life scenario. All I can say is point proven. Think about it.

1) poker bunny is terrible for the game/atmosphere. I only play like ~10 hours a month these days but playing with her for a couple of hours was the most unpleasant experience I've had playing poker the last few years. She's condescending towards fish, talked non-stop about GTO/solvers/plugging in hands to whatever it is that cool kids do now, and tanked a looong ass time during hands. Basically everything you'd hate to see in a winning poker player.
Because of how insufferable she was, I stalked her on twitter when I went home that night. She just so happened to post on youtube/twitter about how she took an IQ test and scored 145 or something. Kinda a weird gal
2) RR and spy are right about the asian culture. IIRC RR lived in asia for a while. and Spy is actually asian.
true.
lol A+
