yeah im giving it probably one last go (then jumping to artifact later this year).
The huge upside of hearthstone to me is how easy and comfortable it is to play while multitasking watching other stuff, chatting, eating. Anything.

Hearthstone has it's pay to win structure in a reasonable spot. I also play Clash Royale and it's just ridiculous if you compare the two. Clash Royale is another card game that is based on cards that you collect, only in that game, you collect multiple copies of a card and use those copies to level the card up. There are far fewer cards (maybe ~50 total) and they are obtained through chests (packs) but it's completely random what comes out of them.
The way Royale works is like this: If you spend the initial $50, you will probably get a Legendary card. If you spend an extra $200, you start the game with 2 mana instead of 1 and you get an upgraded hero power. If you send $300 on top of that, you start with 35 health. If you spend $1,000 on top of that, you start with 40 health and get the Keleseth effect on your whole deck. If you spend an extra $5,000 you get 2 Keleseth effects, and if you spend $10,000, you get 3 Keleseth effects.
More simply: if you pay X you get a 5 mana 5/5. If you pay 5X you get a 5 mana 6/6. If you pay 50X you get a 5 mana 7/7. If you pay 100X you get a 5 mana 8/8. If you pay 1,000X you get a 5 mana 9/9.
Then ladder just works itself out. If you can win with your 5 mana 5/5's, you'll get matched against 5 mana 6/6's and so on until you find your spot on ladder. Imagine if Heartstone worked that way.
When Witchwood comes out, I'll spend the initial $50 and maybe another $50 at some point. I've put ~$100 in to each of the previous expansions, and maybe a little more in to the classic set. But I'll have less than $500 invested in whatever current standard is. But I'll have the ability to play pretty much any deck I want to on Standard Ladder.
In Clash Royale, I've spent ~$200 and I have 1 deck that's viable on ladder. I could spend another $200 and maybe have a second playable deck if I get lucky in opening cards.
So Hearthstone isn't exactly cheap but it could be a LOT worse. You could build an entire golden Hearthstone collection for the price of one maxed out Clash Royale deck.

I don't recommend that anyone try to pick up Clash Royale, by the way. I'm just offering it as a comparison. Clash Royale makes Hearthstone look cheap and fair.

They release a new legendary card 2 or 3 times a year and it’s legitimately $5,000-$10,000 to max out each one.

I've probably spent $600 on this game since closed beta and prior to that $20 for 30 packs the last thing I purchased was Karazhan. I have a full collection of wild and could make any standard deck I wanted. This seems pretty reasonable. I did DE all my extra goldens.

tbh it's not fair how much i've spent on hearthstone vs. overwatch, when OW is the much better game

I bought the preorder just so i can play chameleos priest. That card looks nutso fun.
Im probably $400 or so into this game over several years. Honestly for the price i consider it good value. Ive played more HS than just about anything else in that time frame

Still free to play, still making rank 5 when I choose, don't doubt I could make legend if I put the time in.
Really don't like the arena changes though, so might give this game up again

I think the arena changes will be fine. They need time to tune it correctly IMO.

I find it very easy to maintain a constant collection of meta decks as long as I:
-Dust every gold duplicate
-Dust every card that falls out of standard
-Buy the bare minimum of product that has the highest value. While the adventures where out that was the only product I bought. Now I only buy the preorders.
This comes out to a monthly expenditure of 12.5 bucks.
Granted, I'm doing this with an established base of cards. I spent 500ish the first couple of years I played ($25ish/mo). But I don't even play that much. I take extended breaks and probably clear less than half the quests each season which is costing me a lot of gold.

I love the rotation month set, get so much free dust from HoF and the Rotating sets. I'll be picking up 21k dust from that alone today, won't get another pack besides the pre-order.

ROFL THE SHUDDERWOCK COMBO HAHAHAH
you can basically cast him 3 times first turn and next turn u can play him 8+ times (and u lifestealed to full hp and got him to like 10 on first turn...)
might be the first card ever to get nerfed on first week (wouldnt be surprised if he was nerfed to 10 mana or worse on day 1)
