So how do I learn to get good at this game, learn the decks, techniques etc? I don't even understand some of the threads on here! Any recommendations for youtube vids I can watch?

Former 2p2er and famous Hearthstone streamer Trump has a series of 10 videos going over the basics of the game.

You can also check this beginners post on Reddit. A bit old, but should be good to get you started!

My advice would be to first build/unlock cards for either mage or paladin cards (depending whether you want to go to the face with spells or made dukes and attack). Try to figure out what cards each of the other classes can cast to stop your gameplan and go from there.

You can get all of the classes unlocked and do the basic quests by fighting against the computer at first. It is really hard to beat a real opponent without any cards and the computer opponents will be a lot easier.

Thanks, I did play a bit on beta about a year ago, so unlocked a few classes then, have been unlocking the remaining classes now and playing on ranked with the basic decks in the Trump vids and have been winning most games up to rank 20.

I did try a couple of arena runs when I first played, managed a 5 a 3 and a zero I think. How should I spend my gold now as I feel I should wait more to play arena till I am familiar with all the classes? Is it worth unlocking some of the additional solo stuff with gold?

After the basics like unlocking the cards with basic decks v the comp I found the hearthstone world championship vids on YouTube super helpful. It wont translate 100% but you'll see both cards of top players and get an idea of their thought process with overall solid commentary.

As am estimate my play moved forward months from watching compared to just playing and figuring it out on my own.

Then just go to hearthpwn, look through the popular decks right now and try and throw something together substituting cards you don't have and have some fun trying various decks.

Wasn't the World championship pre GvG?

I think more recent videos will be useful to see how the game is currently played. Trump's youtube channel is good.

I also like Strifeco's channel, as he explains his thought process throughout the games.

And, of course, both Trump and Strifecro stream, but I really don't have time to watch hours of streaming at a time, so I like their 30 minute highlight videos they post on their youtube channels.

More recent tourneys can be found on youtube also, like this channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6c...4P9wT8Kws2iq4Q

it really depends.
if you are doing the free to play thing, which is very hard to do at this point since you only get gvg packs from the arena, you want to jump in the arena right away and get used to it since it plays very different from constructed.
if you want to play on a competetive level you will need access to some of the cards from nax and propably from the new adventure too its hard to say at this point.

my advice would be to play what veer is the most compelling to you and not worry about how you will fill out your collection without paying money at this point because you propably wont.
but i you want to go free to play i would advise you to chose one class and stick with it, at least for no untill you unlocked evrything you want to build all the popular decks with that class.

What's the best way to get cards and stuff if I don't spend any real money. Should I use my gold to play in the arena (I expect to win 2.5ish games on avg with my current deck, just a guess) or wait until 700 and get a solo adventure?

Wait until 700 gold for a wing, then. Playing arenas and playing them sub-50% will lose you gold.

Honestly though just play whatever is the most fun for you.

Better to do Nax or blackwing?

Also, what rank would be considered an achievement for me to get to on pretty much free decks? Basically been playing ranked for a week or so while unlocking anything. Expect I will stay doing free to play, unless I really get into this.

I do have a lorewalker cho and a deathwing though. I should be disenchanting cho and getting something better presumably?

i haven't seen this mentioned but there are also some pretty easy achievements that get you free gold/packs. i don't remember all of them but off the top of my head:

unlocking all the classes
getting all the classes to lvl 10
disenchanting a card
getting 100 wins
playing a game on ipad
playing a game on iphone

To add to this.

Your first arena entry is free
playing a game on an Android tablet
playing a game on an Android phone
buying certain Blizzard products (I know Diablo 3, but probably others also).

Keep in mind that if you're an iOS user, just borrow a friend's phone for a few minutes, play a game on it, then log out. Boom, free pack.

Personally I would try out both arena and the ladder and see what I like the most and then stick to that. If you want a cheap deck that still is good try Murolcks as warlock. To build it you mostly need classic packs.

I'm pretty new I have a level 27 mage and level 12 paladin. What would be the fastest way to create competitive decks for both these classes for ranked? Im willing to spend some money but probably not more than $50. Should I be disenchanting cards from other classes? Is it essential to do the quests?

Paladin decks tend to be more costly than Mage decks. Best way really is to look up popular decks (and what cards they use), determine what you have (therefore, what you need) and spend what money you're willing to pay in order to get those specific cards

Yes, you should do quests. 40 gold for 2 wins is a lot better than 10 gold for 3 wins. If the quest is for a class you don't run, you can go to the list of quests and x it out to get a new one that hopefully you can compete.

I recommend buying the 2 addons with cash.

Friendly psa for new players-

The first 5-10 days of the month you will be playing vs fully optimized decks rank 15+. After that it will cool off.

Probably pick Naxx over BRM simply because we already know that various Naxx cards are staples in many different decks (particularly Sludge Belcher and Loatheb, but also several other cards).

You can also buy wings individually instead of buying the whole set, though I believe you have to buy them in order. I suppose that in theory, you could buy the first two wings of Naxx (to get Loatheb and Sludge Belcher) and the first wing of BRM to get Emperor Tharussian (and Grim Patron if you plan to play the Patron warrior deck).

I haven't look at exactly what cards are unlocked when, but something like this would be optimal to getting just all of Naxx or all of BRM first if you are going to spend no $ on the game
