At my home game, most of us drink beer while we play. I never have any trouble whatsoever falling asleep after the homegame.

Now, when I go to the casino, that is when I have trouble winding down because I barely drink when playing there.

I must be lucky. I don't get wound up after a session. I can book a huge win or have a session where I drop 8 buyins and still fall asleep within minutes of my head hitting the pillow.

Perhaps you guys are playing above your bankroll?

I'm not fabulously wealthy, but losing $10 at my weekly tourney isn't what keeps me awake.

I get pretty wired when I play, mainly because I'm trying to stay intensely focused on the game. It's tough to just turn that focus off when the game is over; it usually takes me a while to wind down.

It's not mainly about the actual dollar amount lost but making mistakes that I shouldn't be making. Lack of focus that caused me to miss something that should have kept me from making the mistakes are also things that I tend to dwell on, and hopefully minimize the next time out.

I only play w/ a bankroll that I can afford. If I started losing mortgage money than I'd really have some sleep disorders, lol.

yeah we film a good amount of hands from our tournaments and I'm usually up at 3am watching it over.

I've got pretty bad sleep hygiene to begin with...

I prefer something a little mindless.... ....42 minutes of something formulaic on the Media Center machine, or another scroll through Facebook and/or my favorite download site. Then, a glass of milk and bedtime.

I'm getting old.

Sex always works for me! Yeah the old lady hates the late night sessions when I wake her out of a dead sleep but she is good to me

PS. Did you sense the jealousy in that? I sleep in the guest bedroom trying not to wake anyone up.

Sometimes not even the mistakes or good plays I'm making, but what I'm seeing at the table from other players. I replay their hands and try and figure what to do or how to play if I'm in a similar spot with them.

Last week I was replaying a hand where one player 4-Bet shoved all-in and the other person tanked, and tanked, and tanked and then called.

4-Bettor tables 99 and the caller tabled 77 - and I was like wtf! As the hand was playing out I was assiging ranges and realized how horribly wrong I was.

For the better part of a week now I've been thinking of what I do with my range against those players - and what their ranges against me might be.

That night I was very restless and I wasn't even in the hand.

Wow, your wife hates the late night sessions, you wake her up out of a dead sleep and you still get some?! You must be very good to her when she is awake to get that kind of treatment. Consider yourself very lucky

Same here - I don't have a consistent bedtime routine, and I fall asleep in front of the TV way too much.

I think I need to institute a cutoff time for electronics, and just wind down with a good old fashioned paper book. Studies have shown that glowing screens play havoc with the biological mechanism that guides your body to sleep, so I'm sure that all the late-night computer & TV time doesn't help my borderline insomnia.

Check this out:

It auto adjusts your monitor brightness for your computer based on the time of day. It's an awesome piece of software that I highly recommend.

This is a really good idea, and probably will help with focus and attention during the game as well.

Does anyone have advice on how to wind down after poker? Things you have tried that work?
All the guys at my game play 7 card no peek for $100... win you win $600 from blind luck, you tend to sleep like a baby.

I on the other hand, always go to waffle house... get home around 6am and then get to bed around 8 or 9. 3 hours isn't bad?

This is wrong.

Nobody goes to Waffle House. You can only end up there....

FWIW, it works better if you're coming home with an envelope full of winnings from binking a tourney.
