What if your opponent calls a big river bet because they misread their hand? What if your opponent calls a big river bet because they misread their hand?

The questions is if you give money back to a player who misreads their hand, would they return the favor?

If they wouldn’t give money back to you in the opposite scenario, but you give back to them, then they’re freerolling you.

The standard is to not give money back because you can’t know how they’d react in the opposite scenario.

happened 2 nights ago at my game.

every one agreed that it was a bummer

winner scooped the pot and stacked the chips - he also agreed that it was a bummer

zero dollars were returned, life moved on

if someone is totally new to the game and called misunderstanding his holdings then I would 100% return his last bit he called with because i was sure it wasn't an angle and want to keep him in the game and happy

if it's someone who knows better but made that mistake then if it's a very good friend i'll offer to return it privately after the game, if no personal relationship then nothing - no matter what not returning publicly nor at the table - as others said, once you establish this precedent it opens up to exploitation by anglers, ie someone can now hero call their overpair and when it's bad claim they thought it was a set etc etc

You're gonna lose a ton of money in the future because you weren't nice to the biggest whale around.
Still not a good idea?
The rules (and ethics) aren't fungible based on how much you can fleece the participants. You shouldn't rule differently based on a player's bankroll and propensity lose it to you.

Seems silly to give back money or change the action in this scenario. No Mulligans in poker.

What if the player made the opposite mistake and folded the better hand? Are you going to rule his hand live and allowed the player to change his action?
