I’m going to have a custom table made for home games and can’t decide if I want a racetrack or not. I like the look of them but other than the looks, I don’t get the point.

Taking a poll to see what people think of the racetrack element.

My main room before the pandemic had them, and they were super annoying and most hated it. I would pass on the racetrack if I were you.

What was the annoying part? The sound of chips on the wood? Cards getting stuck?

Nay, they make it more awkward moving chips/cards to/from the middle of the table.

This, also the racetrack wasn’t even with the felt so cards/chips were constantly getting stuck. The room was in the process of changing this last I knew, and had done it to multiple tables already. It is MGM Grand in Detroit Michigan.

Dont do it. Players do not like.
Cannot look at cards easily

This. They also make it hard to shuffle chips.

Oh yeah, I forgot about this issue. Really hard to get a thumb under the cards to check your holding, and a lot of people responded to it by squeezing the cards so hard that they didn't last as long.

Nay... For reasons stated above... And it seems to encourage people to place their drinks there too.. Which I feel is a recipe for disaster.
Why there are ever cup holders or drinks anywhere near the table, I will never understand.
Side tables are your friend.

Well, it seems the nays have it. That’s going to save me a couple bucks on the table, too. I’ll leave this open to give the yays a chance to catch up to the nays but it’s pretty much a landslide at this point.

I agree with above....nay.

Also, when building a custom table, beware of over-doing the accessories.

-A little raised rail is good, a large raised rail is a pain in the ass and a waste of money. No raised rail is better than too much.

-LED lights built in to the table are just flair. No added playability and added cost.

EDIT to add: My next table will be a round table instead of oval specifically designed to play 7 (maybe 8) for mixed games. Obviously, if you want 9+, oval is the way to go...but round is worth considering if you prefer a smaller game.

I don't mind the racetrack aslong as its even with the felt. Chips and cards have to slide easily across it. The table I play it on, cards were always left half on the racetrack, half on the felt easy to look at them. This table had a raised wooden rail all around. A few players would put their cards there which was a no no. Doesn't matter to me , racetrack or no racetrack.

I have a racetrack on mine and wish I didn't. It looks great but as others have said, it is basically dead space. Can't pick up cards on it easily, can't easily shuffle ships on it. And mine is wood so I imagine in time it will look like crap (scratches) from the chips.
