Man, Covid really killed this forum. Hope to see an upswing in interest once the pandemic is over, but I fear that people will have trouble getting momentum for home games up again after so long away.

Not sure if this is the right thread to post this but here goes: I need strategy advice on how to beat a home game.

I have been playing a weekly home game for about 2 years. The game itself has run for almost 10 years and yet the regs are pretty beginner level. No one has even heard of 2+2. More on that later. This game has a very peculiar structure which is quite intransigent.

Structure:
It's a 8 player STT. We start with 40k chips with blinds 100/200. The blinds increase every 30 minutes (with 10-15 mins cigarette break at every increase). The increases are large - 100/200, 200/500, 500/1000, 1000/2000, 2000/5000 and so on. Rebuys are allowed for the first 3 hours. At the end of 3 hours, a final add-on is allowed for everyone (no matter how many rebuys) for double the buy-in amount for 80k chips. The blinds at this point are 2k/5k. The game usually ends in 2-3 more hours. We have 10 games in a season and the winner gets a trophy at the end. We have only had a total of 5 seasons, we were not counting seasons before that.

The regs:
Reg 1: Solid player. Has won tournaments online pre 2010. Plays decently tight pre-flop and raises hands preflop if he wants to play. Decent hand-reader and tightish post flop, playing his strong hands aggressively. Almost never bluffs which is probably a good strategy. Has won 1 season out of 5.

Reg 2: Loose Aggro like you've never seen before. This guy is so aggro that if he isn't playing that day, the total pot size is lower by at least 4-5 buyins. He bluffs a lot with no SDV hands, small and medium SDV hands, all draws, including inside straight draws and so on. For example, a hand I played. I had K4s in SB. I limped, he called. Flop is A58TT, I check, he bets I call (with K high, no FD). Turn is 6 making 2 FDs on the board. I check, he bets > 1/2 pot, I call (because he bluffs). River is a 9 completing the first flush (and 7 makes a straight). He bets massive. I think for a long time and fold, he shows T2o.
If he ever has a hand, he gets paid off by pretty much everyone. He normally busts out a few times during the rebuy period and pretty quickly after the add on period. However, if he ever accumulates a big stack, rebuys galore. He wins 1-2 times in every 10 times whenever luck is on his side. Has not won a season.

Reg 3: Unpredictable. Likes to both slow play monsters a lot and run massive bluffs. Again decent hand-reader. Has quite a few weaknesses but does well with hiding his monsters and getting paid off. Has won 1 season.

Reg 4: He was pretty bad till last year but has started studying and reading. Has also started playing online cash games at NL2 and is improving. Asks me for advice the next day which I give freely. He won the recent season (a big part was him being lucky quite a bit) and attributes to me.

Others are fishy. One is extremely tight and passive, limps with KK pre-flop. Almost never wins a tournament but occasionally wins massive pots. Another one barely knows hand values and frequently refers to charts on his phone to figure out how strong his hand is. However, both of these players’ strength is playing super tight pre-flop and therefore inning occasional monster pots.

I have won the remaining 2 seasons out of the 5. I am decent (Positive winrate at NL10 online cash) but am looking for strategy advice to crush this game thoroughly. I'm even willing to read a book but haven't found one for this specific structure. The Moshman book doesn't cover rebuys and addons so he recommends very tight play initially which doesn't seem to apply here. Variance plays a massive part as most pots reach all in by flop, turn or river.

Sounds like a pretty standard STT turbo structure. It will be high variance, as that's just the way these structures are. People probably limp way too late for way too large a percentage of their stack, and are reluctant to play a pushbot game. Play tight for value at > 25BBs effective, and play a pushbot strat at > 12. The in between level is so V dependent I would hesitate to advise you on it in general. Any older STT book, especially one aimed at low buy-in games pre Black Friday should be a good reference.

Thanks, this helps! So you're saying I should play tight at > 25. Can you please explain because (a) rebuys are allowed (b) we start at 200BBs?
Can you name a few (or point me to a thread) the books you refer to?

We'll, yeah, but how long does that last? For the first couple of rounds you can just play it like cash. After that, you should take most of the speculative hands that the rest of the table like to limp/call with out of your range, and be raising stronger hands and usually not bluffing without a made hand other than flop c-bets in HU pots, say from 25-60BBs effective.

I don't really remember the good STT books except Colin Moshman's, and that one may give your Vs too much credit. At the level these guys sound like, you might consider Harrington on Holdem, though you'll have to mentally convert his "M" concept to BBs.

Turns out Adam Savage has a home game. Unsurprisingly, he is an advocate of the hates for pocket Jacks. Not a hand for the ADHD player, imo.
