That is cheaper than what I saw on CT. Seems you could get only about 400 for that price. How did you get that deal?

I still feel the same way. A few months ago I got an email saying they were going to update the site. Nothing has changed as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, it's most definitely a pretty crappy GUI. But they seem to survive off of a select group of sponsors and a few dedicated posters who also pitch in some money and since they serve such a small group anyways it doesn't look like they have much incentive to try and expand by making their website more appealing. Perhaps if a group of their sponsors started voicing discontent about the sites appearance and how it hinders their future prospects as advertisers on the site something would change.

The Empress chips were a steal during the BF sale, some as low as a quarter each. And the Empress roulettes were .18/chip from the beginning (.12/chip on BF), so you could easily build a huge set of those for <$200.

It was a part of one of the chiproom sales i ended up with a strong majority of 5s which i think were the cheapest so it brought down the price

I don't know about that . . . a teaser would normally be up by now. If there is nothing posted by the end of the weekend, I would not count on it.

How would anyone rate the Venerati chips vs the Nevada Jack's composite, the ones with the dead cowboy as the design? I have to make a choice, new Venerati or an outstanding price on a used set of Nevada Jacks for my low stakes cash game.

I guess you know they are both ceramic chips.

The Nevada Jack's are good chips, but the surface texture and the graphic design are not my favorite. The finish is more rough than any other chip I've seen. I guess it is supposed to help you stack them without slipping, but they will slip as much as any other ceramic, in my opinion. The edges are also very sharp, at least on the set I play with regularly.

I like the Veneratis a lot. They have a classic, no nonsense design, with the possible exception of over-doing somewhat the scroll work on the edges. But it gives them an old-fashioned, Victorian look. They feel a lot like Chipco chips, the top-of-the line ceramic brand. The surface has a slightly rough texture, but not too much. The edges are finely rounded, similar to a Chipco.

It is really a matter of taste. Do you like the wild west theme, or the river boat look? You will be happy with whichever one you prefer. I would choose the Veneratis.

Thank you. I don't care for the NJ look, as they don't fit into my mildly posh set up. I will probably ante up for the Venerati if there is no significant difference in material quality, which is what you seem to be suggesting, so that I am happy long term.

Get samples, get samples, and while you're at it, get samples.

I think what he was saying was 'get samples.'

Most places will send you samples for a very reasonable price, and it will save you from dropping a lot of money on chips and then being unhappy with them. I did that before I bought my last round of chips, going so far as to oil up the samples to see what they'd look like at that point before I ever put in a full order.

Ok, ok, I will get samples!

Sidepot will send me samples of all their chips for $20, the Nevada Jack's guy is going to bring his chips, and everyone will have their say at the next game. I'm running a "tips for chips" campaign and the guys have already helped me reach 1/3 of the goal.

Thanks again for the advice.

Just to add, by the end of January, I will have new tourney set of Private Cardroom solids. If I can ever figure out how to post pics, I will.

Our host picked up used Chipco's from the chiproom (courtsey of me informing him of the chiproom sale on Haloween) for ~ $0.34/chip. These were the Hooters Renton/Southpark. After cleaning them up they look practically new and getting original chipcos for that price was a steal. So it's worth looking into used ceramics.

And Milo013 - to post pics you have to first upload them to an imgae hosting site liek imageshack or photobucket. Then you post the link to the image in the pop up box that shows up when you click on the "Insert Image" icon.

We played with the Nevada Jacks last night, so I took a more critical look at them. I like the surface of them now, more than I first did. They have a linen-like texture. It is different from other chips that I've used, so it put me off at first, it reminds me of the linen finished Paulson chip inserts that I've seen.

On the other hand, the graphic image on these chips is not very sharp. There is a fuzziness that might be attributable to the rough surface. So I mark the chip down on that score.

Also, I believe these chips are made by applying a clear sticker on top of a ceramic blank. With my finger nail, I could feel a definite edge to the sticker. It is the sticker that has the rough surface. This seems like a cheap process to make a chip.

So yes, get samples, and you can decide for yourself if this is the chip for you.

So I got my Sidepot samples today, in order to better examine the Venerati, and I have to say my first impression was being slightly let down, on account of the plastic appearance and feel. The Cigar and Snifter ceramic seems to have been created with decidedly better materials, but its text and graphic design, while having a far better resolution, is not an significant improvement over its cheaper but more elegantly simple counterpart. I'm wondering if wear and oil will improve the Venerati's texture and very hard surface. Naturally, I am being fussy, and realize that the Venerati is a tremendous upgrade over my last set, in addition to being a great value.

There is simply no getting around the fact that you get what you pay for, and the Protege (extremely sharp edges, as some have noted, being its only drawback) sample that came with it makes me think that I should either go all the way for a top of the line chip, or order a custom ceramic that will likely be as good as the Venerati and unique as well. I'll see what the players say on Saturday.

Just got my new tourney set from a guy over at HPT. I am now the proud owner of just over a thousand (1,020) Private Cardroom Solids in the following breakdown:

240 x T25 green
240 x T100 black
200 x T500 purple
200 x T1000 orange
100 x T5000 grey
40 x T25000 brown

Now all I need is a new birdcage . . .
