MAIN EVENT TOURNAMENT
Buyin: $50 + $10 Bounty
Format: Freezeout with bounties
Structure: TBD

LOCATION & ACCOMMODATIONS INFO

Palimax is in the Ahwatukee Foothills region of Phoenix. [Ahwatukee, unlike Tempe, Mesa, Chandler isn't a town, but a neighborhood name.] Ahwatukee is a giant cul-du-sac, with no access to the rest of town.
  • 26 minutes from Sky Harbor Airport, assuming you drive the speed limit.
  • 8 minutes from Gila River Casino's "Wild Horse Pass" location. It's a full casino (to the extent of Arizona law) with slots and most non-dice table games. It has a 25-table poker room spreading several low and mid-limit LHE, LO8, and spread-limit (pseudo NL) HE. WHP averages $112 a night for the long weekend. Several other casinos are within 45 minutes.
  • The closest remaining hotels are at I-10 and Chandler Blvd, about the same 8 miles from the venue. La Quinta averages $87 a night for two double beds during the event.
  • 35 minutes from Harrah's Ak Chin Hotel and Casino outside of Phoenix in the town of Maricopa.

Okay, the official thread is up. T-minus three months and counting.

Let's talk about the following:
  1. Who's coming?
  2. What games & stakes do we want to play?
  3. Structure for the Main Event?

I'm 50/50 right now. If I can find a new job soon, I'm in. If not my current job goes through August and I found out that week is the week I could not take anytime over the summer. Every other week I could use my remaining vacation. FML....

Would love to see a $2/4-$4/$8 limit game be run, either mixed or something like LHE/O8. Last years 1/2 full kill HOP game was pretty great.

Main Event...Would like here a entry + bounty as someone who doesn't plan on making it to the final table, getting back some of my money would be great. Also multiway flip for entry is required beforehand.

I know that there's a only a handful of you consider out of town visits of any great length. Do remember that I'll be providing two hotel rooms with the catch of a little driving for somewhere between 1 and 4 people, depending on sharing/wastage.

Similarly, I'd never expect out of town guests to pay for the catered meals while visiting my house. [You're on the hook for unplanned and incidentals, of course.]

I'm still good to go and stay at one of the Harrah's rooms so long as my orders get re-cut correctly (75% chance I'm good).

For the record I should be good to go as well, barring any kind of life/work emergency that might come up. I think I'm also 3rd on the list for one of the Harrah's rooms (behind jzpiano and Breich).

I'm in for the Saturday tourney barring any unexpected family plans. What is the buyin going to be?

I think we'd talked about keeping it in the $50-100 range but hadn't yet settled on an amount.

Last year it was $40 plus a $10 bounty.

Any other out-of-towners thinking about this? Let me know, even if you're iffy.

How about $60 + $15 bounty for the Saturday tourney?

Pali, do you want to be more specific about games/stakes for each night or just nail that down later?

Gentlemen,

I'm (figuratively) about to press the button on the comped rooms for Harrah's. As it stands, do I only need one double starting Thursday night with a Monday checkout, to give everyone plenty of Sunday time?

I can certainly book another as it gets closer -- in fact, my July comps haven't shown up yet, but should be wonderful thanks to a recent jackpot spree.

Next post I'll discuss games...

So let me clarify what I said about games before.

When I suggested "carnival" games, I wanted to open a table up for those people who wanted to play games from Pfapfap's cards, a reduced set of the cards, or simply wanted to pick a few oddball games (second best, double board omaha, whatever) instead of playing a simple mix. A less-serious table.

Obviously, like any poker night, this depends on who shows up and what they want to play. I have a fairly large group of local poker players who play at casual limits, and another group of poker players that play at the sort of $1 home limits that we run our beer drinkin' games at. I've also got access to a smaller group of home players that plat at normal casino limits -- so getting people to play crazy doubling games with quarters isn't impossible, and neither is "serious" hold'em games FOR STACKS!!111!eleven!

Thursday I'd simply like the door open to casual play and drinking. I'll probably have a few of the local people who sign up for Friday manage to take the day off and turn this into a "real" long weekend. I'll likely be doing a bit of shuttling, but getting a game going won't be a problem, even with the ones who have to work the next day.

Friday, I expect that the day crowd will be limited, although I have a few players who'll have the day off or who work non-traditional schedules. I'll make sure we have a few food delivery options, but I won't expect a crowd until dinner-time. Geography is wide in Phoenix, so I wouldn't expect heavy attendance until 8pm, but it still sounds like a great night for Carolinas. I would expect that a game comprised of my SingleDollarBlind people would break out, which means that there'd be a NLHE/PLO game in the $0.50/$1 or $1/$2 range that will likely happen. I'd also expect that a quarter game of some sort or a "Sit and Go" speed event will happen as well.

Saturday will be the tournament, and I think that whatever range the few out-of-towners want to play is fine. I probably lose a lot of my locals at $100, but at $60 I should fill the room. I expect a the bustouts will form games as they please.

Sunday will be a lot like Friday, I imagine.

---

I need beer options.
I need food suggestions for Saturday (or Friday if I move Carolinas to Sunday)

I'll continue those next post while I gather some info...

Beer: I'll be providing a keg of local beer. I beer. Beer. Beer. Beer.

You've got a couple of choices, mostly notably Four Peaks and SanTan Brewing. I'm also becoming a fan of SunUp Brewing - all of which (and much much more) can be ordered at Tops Liquors, an college-town staple since, well, forever...

Please provide your thoughts. I'm more of a pilsner drinker myself. I like yellow beer, no matter how much I'm mocked for it, but I'm quite open to pleasing my guests.

--

I'd like an opinion on the Mexican food as well. While I'm thrilled to present Carolinas to you and offer you more "classic" Mexican food: http://www.carolinasmex.com/Carolinas_Menu.pdf -- I'm also willing to serve you gringo Mexican food with jalapeno cream cheese and chimichangas: http://www.juliosaz.com/selfserve.html

I'm happy to do this either Saturday "all day" or Friday night.

---

I need food suggestions for the other night.

I'm certainly in for one of the rooms if available. I think Breich and jzpiano also expressed interest.

I updated the OP with the gist of this post - let me know if you want me to change or clarify anything. What time do you think we'll start the tourney on Saturday?

Also, I put Julio's in for dinner on Saturday. I'm happy with authentic, but my thought was that gringo Mex might be more acceptable across a large crowd. Sound reasonable?

I lean toward medium to dark beers and Belgians, and I see a lot at Tops that I like. But when I travel, I'd rather drink the best of the local stuff, especially if it's hard to get outside of the area.

Here's what jumped out from the two breweries mentioned above:
  • SanTan Devil's Ale gets pretty decent online reviews and is an American Pale Ale. It's a popular style but the hoppiness may be too much for yellow beer drinkers.
  • Four Peaks Kilt Lifter also sounds good. It's a Scottish Ale - a malty brown ale, usually sweet and a little smoky with very little hop bitterness. It's something that I can drink a lot of.

A couple quick items of note:

I officially have the first room reserved in Maricopa for either the first anti-social person to take or the first pair of adults to take. Two queens, non-smoking. Courtesy of my degenerate gambling habit at Harrah's. It's reserved starting Thursday with a Monday checkout. I know out of town participation is minimal, but I'll likely book a second room when my July comps come active and I can simply use a promo of some sort. [I don't have any intown promos past 6/29 posted yet.] Worst case scenario is, I imagine, that people get their own room, or that someone from the other half of Phoenix parties out there one night.

In mostly unrelated news, I was fired from my job of 14 years. Reduction in force. Expensive staff and senior guys went -- 70 of us. This doesn't change my plans. With the wife's new job, PTO payouts, severance... ....we're already financially ahead of last year, and I've got a lot of time to start looking again before money is an issue -- at all. [The wife closed her first million dollar deal this quarter, so we'll be just fine...]

This just means I get to make the place nice in time for the event, work on upgrades and fixes, etc.

I'm going to start actively socializing the event with my local players. I can regularly get 20+ for short-notice weekend events as long as there's a little party involved. I'm pretty certain that I'll have cash and tournament players for all sorts of games all weekend long.

Anyway, I'll be working on a flyer and a hard schedule this weekend, and upcoming week. Still trying to adjust to my new schedule.

Ugh. Sorry man I'm in the same boat as you (minus the million dollar closing...) so I can relate. Sucks nobody can feel secure in their employment anymore. I'm still trying to find a way out there. Maybe I'll win enough OFC hands to pay for a seat

I appreciate everything around the Chicago event; so do remember that short of gambling money, pretty much all accommodations once you land are taken care of. Just figure out how to get on a plane.

We'll arrange you a car buddy and book a comped room.

Sorry to hear about the job, Pali, but glad you've got plenty of time to find another one. Being the sole breadwinner for my family of five, I can tell you that would not be the case for me. I consider myself very fortunate to have a secure spot with my present employer in an industry where my experience will find me a new job immediately if anything bad ever did happen.

As I've said before, I'll definitely take one of the Harrah's rooms. I'll have a rental car, and I'm willing to provide back-and-forth transport to jzpiano or whoever else stays out there.

I don't mind sharing the room, but I will warn potential roomies that I have sleep apnea. If you room with me, you'll get the pleasure of listening to the humming of my CPAP and/or my loud snoring all night.
