How much to rake? How much to rake?

If you aren't happy with your guests when you host, you need to change something.

Some people need stronger hints/nudges to contribute, if that's what you prefer.

Others would prefer that you just not put things out. They may feel like they didn't get 'full value' our of the food/beverages, and are therefore 'overpaying'.

If it's a semi-regular thing, with a basic group of the same players, why not ask those that want to eat/drink to contribute, or collect a set amount to cover from everyone. Taking out of the pot without telling people up front seems shady.

I have always favored the idea that if your guests can't reciprocate your generosity in hosting by hosting you at their events, they should reciprocate by helping you. No reason they can't say to you .... hey I'm going to bring the food next time.... or hey let me get you some new cards.....

Your loss. I'm one of the 20% of players who tip the host when I win. Hell, sometimes I even tip the host when I don't win.

But I also keep track of how much money should be in the prize pool versus the payouts, and I'd call you out on stealing immediately.

I never said that I wasn't going to disclose the fee. I hope that you would not complain then. You have to have all the stuff. Pay for food and beer. Set up. Clean up. Manage the tournament. Hold the money. Always risk of damage to house and tables.

I agree about all of that. So let's be explicit, did you mean you were going to disclose the fee, or no?

What are your purposes for hosting?

Are you playing?

It's not a party? Well then what is it? A business? If so that's fine. ... but then it's not really a home poker game ..... it's an underground game you happen to put in your house.

Businesses don't break even before even paying salaries.

Many don't break even. Running a business poorly doesn't make it less of a business

I figured it was obvious and therefor I didn't bother mentioning it. Businesses don't have the intention to break even before paying salaries.
