Earning Points
Each player earns points for playing in events based on the following formula, where n is the number of players in the tournament and p is the place a player finishes:
Points = -n/2 + n/sqrt(p/n)

Winning Seats
The Regular Season player who has earned the most points in his/her 10 best events will earn a ticket to the $1100 tournament. For every additional $550 raised by the league, a seat is awarded to the next highest point earner. All remaining moneys go towards the freeroll. If a player cannot use a seat he/she earns, then that player will forfeit the seat and be eligible for the freeroll.

Profit-Sharing (80-20)
Players who earn seats through the league and cash in an event will keep 80% of his/her winnings. All other players will share the remaining 20% based on participation in the regular season. Each event played will count as 1 share.

Post-Season Freeroll
All leftover money raised by the league will go towards the Freeroll.
Any player who has played in at least 5 events, but hasn’t earned a seat will be eligible. Starting stacks will be based on participation throughout the regular season.
• Events 1 – 4: T500 in chips for each event played (Play in all 4 and earn an extra T1000)
• Events 5 – 8: T600 in chips for each event played (Play in all 4 and earn an extra T1400)

Looks good! I just finished setting up our league as well, very similar in many regards, including the overly complicated formulae. I'm too lazy to crunch some numbers, so might plugging a few in for us to give an example of points?

Hope it goes well!

Here's some Point Distributions:

15 Players (194 Pts): 50.6, 33.6, 26.0, 21.5, 18.5, 16.2, 14.5, 13, 11.9, 10.9, 10, 9.3, 8.6, 8.0, 7.5

8 Players (66.9 Pts): 18.6, 12.0, 9.1, 7.3, 6.1, 5.2, 4.6, 4.0

Yikes.

Not to be a negative nelly, but what happens when players start dropping out because they have no chance, and then those who are close on points feel resentment for being forced to keep playing to defend, yet not making a win not worth nearly as much as a win early in the league? Winning against more than half the field is worth less than half as many points. I'd seriously consider tweaking that. Otherwise I think you run the risk of people dropping out fast.

I'll crunch some numbers and see what I can do.

It was a problem I ran into my first year, although I can't remember the point system I used. Mitigating it was that there was no freeroll, so nobody had any reason to keep playing. I was also taking a much higher percentage out of the pool (50%), so it wasn't even worth it to play. What happened was that six guys were fighting over four seats, and it just wasn't even worth it, since they had to keep paying the full buyin.

The folks winning the bigger games should get some benefit, but not so much of one that a win at a smaller game isn't worthwhile. It's the kind of thing that will feed itself, as people stop playing because they can't win, which makes the tourneys worth less for those on the fence, and those who feel forced to play because they're close in points will just be angry about it.

I'm just happy you're figuring this out. I'll be happy to just show up and play poker.

This sounds just like a high school math problem. Oh wait... You should definitely slip in one of these one the next tests.
Good luck with the league. How many members do you think there will be?

I've gotten interest from 9 guys already and I still haven't heard from a few of the regs. I'm sure we'll get a few more. If we get a dozen each week, that'll send 4 guys to the "show".

Is participation in the league mandatory? In other words, can you play in the tournament without contributing to the league?

Anyone can play in the tournaments, but everyone pays the same entry fee. If someone isn't "part" of the league, they can always join. The top 10 scores are counted, so it's possible to do well in a few events and build up a decent point total.

I have a follow up question about the freeroll. If $500 is left over from the regular season, do you pay out the freeroll like any other tournament (e.g. Top 4 cash if 14 players)? Or is yours' winner take all?

I've adjusted the formula a bit. Thoughts?

N = the numbers of players
P = player's finishing place

Points = sqrt(N^3)/P

15 Players: 58.1, 29.0, 19.4, 14.5, 11.6, 9.7, 8.3, 7.3, 6.5, 5.8, 5.3, 4.8, 4.5, 4.1, 3.9

12 Players: 41.6, 20.8, 13.9, 10.4, 8.3, 6.9, 5.9, 5.2, 4.6, 4.2, 3.8, 3.5

10 Players: 31.6, 15.8, 10.5, 7.9, 6.3, 5.3, 4.5, 4.0, 3.5, 3.2

Double points for first place over second seems REALLY high. I found in my league the guys who were finishing consistently 4th or 5th still had a shot, and still kept playing. In this one, a couple of wins is enough to basically eliminate anybody else it seems. Also, double points for winning a game with only 1/3 more players still feels steep. The guy who finishes third in the 15 player game and finally gets it to first in the 10 player game isn't likely to return for next week's 8 player game. It's the kind of thing that has a way of destroying itself.

Or maybe it's fine, I dunno. Try it out, see how it works.

I agree, so I think I have a winner - another pseudo complex formula:

n = # of Players
p = Finishing Place

Points = sqrt(n^3/p)-2n/3

15 Players: 48.1, 31.1, 23.5, 19, 16, 13.7, 12, 10.5, 9.4, 8.4, 7.5, 6.8, 6.1, 5.5, 5.0

10 Players: 25, 15.7, 11.6, 9.1, 7.5, 6.2, 5.3, 4.5, 3.9, 3.3

I dunno, man. 2/3 the players but 1/2 the points? I think you'll find as the league gets near the end, people will drop off, which will make those remaining fight over fewer points, which will encourage more people to drop off, etc.

I do a straight 150 for first, but scale it down to 0, so it's second (and subsequent) place(s) that takes a bit more of a hit. Then I add a bonus as a percentage of cash won (with 1st being around 50 points in an average game). That way it's still worth something to win no matter what, but those who go deep in the bigger games get more.

Freeroll Question

Should the freeroll be winner take all or should it be paid out like a regular tournament?

Is there another prize in the freeroll, or just the extra cash? I'd spread it a little, but weight it towards first and second.

We discussed things last night, and we're pretty excited to start next month. We came across a question.

Should players have to play in a minimum number of games to receive profit-sharing?
Homewood Poker League (CT) - Thoughts? Quote

I don't require it, but my shares aren't linear. I found it helped get some one-offs for the last few games, since it seemed more real and they wanted a taste. I didn't advertise how tiny that taste would be.
