Santa Claus cash game was held Friday nite. 11 players in all. I had 6 prize envelopes. Our game is a 4 rotation game of NLH, PLO, an odd NLH variant we call Amarillo, and a very odd combo game we call NLH Triple Draw. Our stakes are low .25-.50 so I put a $10 chip in each envelope. Strangely all prizes were won within about 30+ hands. One lady (Tina) won 3 times!! This has been well received by our crew. Merry Christmas everybody!!

I enjoy reading about these games. It's a goofy version of poker, but still a lot of fun, and draws out some players who never play otherwise. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanakkah to all.

Very true, especially the bolded part. Every year my group starts talking this game up weeks in advance, and this always brings in some new and infrequent players. Sometimes they stick around for the regular weekly games, so it ends up being not only a fun event but also a great recruiting tool.

Merry Xmas everyone!

The flip side of that is some of the more serious players never play this game. Poker snobbery, is what it is.

Santa: The Cash Game

I adapted the Santa tourney lunacy for my (somewhat staid) group's cash game, and it went off pretty well. Santa drawing took place on red kings and also red SC T9s-32s. (SC obv for Santa Claus). I had about 20 colored stones in a box, here were the 5 prizes:

GREEN BUTTON: LATE CHRISTMAS Everyone pays you 1 BB
DARK BLUE BUTTON: 'TIS FAR BETTER TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE You pay everyone 1 SB
RED BUTTON: I SAW SANTA You get to see any one hand that isn't shown down (once the hand is over)
ORANGE BUTTON: STOCKING STUFFERS Take a scratch card and 2 candy canes
YELLOW BUTTON: BAH HUMBUG For the next 3 hands, you only receive 1 hole card

We opened up the evening with everyone getting one free draw; no one got one of the 4 scratch cards so the good stuff was still in play. People got into it and it added a bit of fun. Best hand of the night was about 90 min in, one guy is grumbling he hasn't won a hand all night (he really hadn't), begs BB to call his open so he can win one. BB obliges with 93o, raiser tid with a cbet and shows a red king, then draws the "pay everyone a SB" button. We all hit the floor laughing so hard. End of the night, two scratch cards were left so we drew for em. No one won any money from the scratch cards.

Overall it didn't affect play too much, a couple of us chased with a red king for a street hoping to make it to HU. The SC Santa's only happened 1x, otherwise it was just the red kings, and prob only about 6 or so over a 3.5 hour cash game (7 handed). Next year I may open it up to suited 1-gappers. I think I'll set something up for Valentine's Day, perhaps players in advance picking the K or Q of hearts depending on their orientation.

Season's greetings! I haven't hosted a home game perhaps since ^^^ back in January; a couple of regs dropped out and we haven't found any fresh blood. But I sent the invite around for the Santa game as I wrote above, and the table filled fast. Hopefully this wll reinvigorate us to at least a monthly game. (Some of us play in another home game, I just like my set-up better.)

I'll switch the prize draws to holding any red Kings (Santa) or any 8 (snowman), that should get us through the bag o' stones. I don't (yet) have any random candy so I may substitue homemade cookies instead.

Awesome. Our holiday invite is already out and currently at 2 tables with a 3rd possible. Really looking forward to some home poker as I haven't played any since my recent move.

Our Santa cash game is ready to roll on the 22nd. 6 $10 chips in 6 envelopes. Any hand won with a Red Santa (King) in the hole takes a prize. Very best of holidays to everyone. And to all Trumpers and Fox News watchers I sincerely wish you a very Merry Christmas too!

Our Christmas party game was last night. There were 39 gifts ranging from $1 to $10 each for the 15 players to chase. It took five hours to deplete the gift pile.

Most popular gift? Likely it was the $1 rolls of Necco wafers or the $9 micro drone.

People are funny about winning stuff. Willing to risk 20x the value of a draw from Santa's Sack of Goodies trying to take down the pot on a bluff with K 5. On balance it was as good to win something from Santa as it was to break even in the session

With so many gifts in the bag, everyone won at least once. One lucky lady claimed nine prizes for herself!

Everyone had a great time, just as expected. People have come to expect / anticipate this game. It is a great way to say thank you to everyone. I encourage every host to consider doing some type of holiday game.

And a good time was had by all -=- DrStrange

Last night I hosted our holiday cash game. Stakes were as always .25/.50, BI $50-100. For seven people, we sure managed to engage in a fair bit of lunacy and drink a lot of alcohol. Those two things might be related. :P

It started when I passed out $1 scratch cards. Four of us hit for a combined whopping $6. I dropped mine in the middle of the table for a first hand splash pot, everyone else who hit followed, and we were off. My 4x UTG raise with a red KJ was called in 5 spots, somehow I didn't see this coming. Flop is J83 all spades, I raise the SB's donk lead, bunch of folds, the donker calls. A 4th spade hits the turn to slow things down, but he bets big otr while I stumble into 2p. Tank on the first hand! Counting the scratchers there's prob 80BB in the middle, but this guy loves to bluff. He says I can pay $3 to see one card, I hand it over and he flips over a 3. I fold, he shows the set. After 30 min we've still only played 5 hands, we've had one bust out (A5 vs 43s on a 543 board, they gii otf) plus host topping up. Every pot was majorly contested and the tanking was legitimate.

After an hour we put the wrapped gifts for the $10 gift exchange on the table and drew cards to see who would pick first. There was a diabetic coma-inducing amount of chocolate, homemade cookies, and alcohol to choose from.

I was going to take a night off from drinking, but someone brought a bottle of Rioja to share with the host, so I simply had no choice. Sadly she was our first casualty (well second if you count my sobriety): she hasn't played much lately, was unlucky to be aggressive in the wrong spots (3bet/shoving over a c/r with A5 above...fwiw she actually had 37% there), and left down $150. The rest of us rolled on until just after 11pm. We had 2 pots late that we all-in preflop for about $50 and $240. The LAGgiest of us was in both, and he offered to to run it twice each time, just to alleviate any late-night cooler pain. He had KK both times (vs AQ then AT), won the first runout each time, lost the second one each time. Tis the season for giving.

The Santa draws were a big hit. I decided to draw on all Kings and all 8s, cuz I am one of those PC multiculti types and there's no reason why we can't have a black Santa. (Though the origin of the Black Santa story from the Netherlands ain't pretty.) This turned out to work almost perfectly, as as we used all 25 draws by the end, unlike last year where we didn't get through half. No one hit on the $2 scratch cards, but with our group, the "I saw Santa" draw (see one unshown hand once the play is over) has value, since we play with each other all the time, and we all hate to fold and never know.

Two of us were the last troopers standing, so off to the pub we went, where he used some of the homemade cookies to bribe our server into an 'after last call' last call. Two drinks later I stumbled home, popped a sleeping pill (cuz that's what middle-aged people do), and woke up this morning to find my apartment looking like a war zone. Bottle caps, wrapping paper, spliied beer, someone in the middle of it all cooked a pizza in the oven, we had it all. It was so bad I've been receiving sympathy cards from Syria.

I look forward to the day when science gets the teleportation thing sorted out, so that we can have a Home Game forum home game. Until then, stay warm, run good, and tell your freinds and family you love them.

Nice trip report! Love a good holiday game. Also, this forum used to organize an annual meetup to play, last one was 2014. Search Home Poker Invitational. I hosted the first in 2012.

Time for my annual bump of this thread...though I see that I forgot to post last year's trip report. Maybe I didn't have the Santa game? In-con-ceivable!

But reading my gang's exploits from years past has me pumped for this year's game, set for next Tuesday. I've got 9 A-list players for my 8-sided table, I'm hoping we all can play and have to get cozy! Going to go with any showdown hand with a K, an 8, or a SC T9s-32s. Scratch cards to start us off, and a $15 gift exchange. I'll post results next week.

Have a warm holiday season y'all.

I am just finished cleaning up after the Christmas party game. Santa brings a big bag of goodies and gives one to any player winning a pot with a red king in his/her hand. The prizes are mostly worth $2 - $10. The other players sometimes bring a few extra gifts to stuff Santa's big bag past full.

We ended up with ~35 gifts, more sweets than anything else, but also scratch off tickets, toys and holiday gifts. As the night goes on we might add a red queen to the winning hand requirements. The goal is to be out of gifts by midnight.

I find it remarkable that the players seriously chase after a $5 gift chance risking $25 to do so. The don't easily give credit to people's big bets either. Everyone betting must be trying to steal the pot with a red king in hand so they can win a box of jelly beans.

And in the end, people seem happy enough with a money losing night if they have a few Santa gifts to show for their efforts. Well that and the home cooked meal my wife and I provide. Mexican bow tie pasta, special queso, a plate of lemon bars plus sodas and snacks. Yum YUM!

A good time was had by all -=- DrStrange

This year's game was again a fun time. Full table of 8, all regulars, poker family if you will.

We drew a prize every time you had a K, an 8, or a SC T9s and below, and you made it to be able to legally turn over your cards. So if you win, if you get to showdown, or if you fold when HU. Made for lots of chasing. We ended up having 40-50 draws I imagine in about 3 hours of play. The only changes I made to the prizes is that I upped the $$$ (our BB is fitty cent but I made it so everyone pays you a buck or you pay everyone a buck, just made for easier chip passing around) and I replaced the Bah Humbug (get one hole card for next 3 hands) with Runaway Reindeer (blind raise $2 next hand).

There was the midgame break for the gift exchange, where we drew for order of picking and you can steal an unwrapped gift that someone else picked. I asked everyone to bring a gift around $15, and unsurprisingly the $15 worth of scratch cards (and a beer!) was the most sought after prize. Host walked away with a whiskey flask that says, "Screw tomorrow." Fun times!

was surprised how many details of past games everyone remembered. Clearly my punters enjoy this game as much as I do; if you host a semi-regular group and you haven't yet added some kind of holiday game to your schedule, I highly recommend it.

Happy holidays!

It took 10 years to find the right home game, but tonight I finally was able to run a wildly successful "Santa Gone Wild" tournament.

The league's annual season ending pot luck was tonight and the group was happy to play a low stakes and fun game after grinding for a trophy and bragging rights all year.

14 players and a whopping 18 buy-ins for one of the most entertaining and fun home tournaments in a really long time.

Big shout out to the OGs that created and fine tuned the game.

I know this is a deep cut necropost to an old thread but I figure bump it so some new folks could find some fun ideas in here.

My thoughts thus far:

1) Everyone bring some "white elephant" type gift (not a crappy one, but one in the $20 range that people at the game would like) then on the top of every hour we do a flip, winner gets to pick a gift. If a person wins a second time they can "steal" a gift from another player. Only one prize per person, or obv. I would win them all.

2) Have everyone either 4 x $5 or 2 x $10 gift card to a variety of places. Whenever someone wins a hand with a or King (santa?) in it they get to pick a gift card.

3) Collect $20 from everyone at the beginning of the night and turn those into 4 x $5 chips that are combined and held separately from player stacks. Every time a or King flops the next hand has a $5 "splash" pot taken from this separate stack.

Anybody ever done something like this for a cash game? Other ideas or suggestions that I could add to the list.
Definitely white elephant with the ability to steal other gifts. It brings a gambling element into it and a lot of fun.
