Re: Buy In Returned

Thats funny. Youre not the first person to tell me that. We have a set of bro's that play in our home game, and every time one cashes, they give each other their buy in back. Hard for me though, cause i play wit my bro and 2 brother-in-laws. I'd lose everytime!

As I said before ...... I think its not as black and white as Cheater fakes emergency and honest player doesn't.

there is the more nuanced issue. We are later told in this thread that there was not what i would call a medical emergency. What we had was a child who was ill and a mother who simply wanted assistance with watching the children.

Not everyone will react to this the same way. Certainly there are people who will treat this as a an emergency and drop everything and run home. but others may say "okay as soon as I'm done doing what i am doing I'll get home and help you out."

So the more nuanced issue is Does the player's treatment of this as an emergency depend upon whether he has an advantage or not. Might an honest person who is shortstacked rush home to help his wife, while the same honest player who is chipleader promises his wife to come straight when he is finished.

And I think its fair and natural that he react this way (obviously for what i consider a real emergency I would expect him to rush home regardless of position). We do this all the time. If you are at work and you get a phone call like this doesn't your reaction depend on what the consequences of your going home might be. If you have nothing that needs to be done immediately at work you may go home early for this emergency. If you had a hugely important task .... this emergency becomes not so urgent.

Re: Buy In Returned

I don't play with "Cheater" in my game, so it's a much, much easier decision for me.

Re: Buy In Returned

I should have written I have played with people I think might be capable of it. This issue has never come up in my game.

Re: Buy In Returned

I guess I'm too "hard core" even though I play home games and in casino's. IMO no one gets a refund once a tournament starts for any reason. We play by TDA rules and enforce all rules such as string bets, out of turn bets, etc even though it's a home game. But "home game" doesn't necessarily mean "everyone is bestest friends and we all sing Kumbyah in a circle while holding hands." Tournaments are a competition and players have varying motivations for playing them. Removing money from the prize pool is not a good idea. IMO.

Re: Buy In Returned

Just depends on the situation, like that hasn't been said already.

If it's a reg and he doesn't have a history of this, return the buyin or push it to the next tournament.

If it's a serious type deal, or he's done this before. I'd say too bad so sad.

+1 for using it for next buy in. Keep the game friendly. I can't tell you how much a friendly atmosphere is beneficial to every member of a home game.

If the buy in was $5000, this discussion might have to take a different tone.

Re: Buy In Returned

For $25 bucks and it's never happened in five years, I would not worry about it. It does not sound like the guy came crying for his money and you guys all decided to be nice to the guy. I would rather keep everyone friendly than develop hard feeling although sounds like the guy was OK with it anyway. It's all good
