I'd like to host a regular game at my home. Can anyone recommend a good website or other resource to drum up players?

I didn't see such a resource here on 2+2 unless I'm missing it, and I'd rather avoid the subscription fees associated with starting a group on a site like meetup.com

Bar poker is great for finding him me games/players.

I think the bar poker idea is great. Face to face meetings are the best way to find players. Also viable to join in some of the other local games. Don't poach their players or their scheduled nights. Think cooperation vs competition. Patience is a nice asset.

It is not very wise to recruit random people you don't know and have never seen before. Could be inviting trouble into your home. It would be blind luck to get a half dozen random degenerates to all show up and play a nice session together and then come back next time.

It's harder than it used to be to find folks that want to play in a home game on a regular schedule. There are not as many bar leagues and charity events as there once was. Still there are some and that's usually a decent place to try to recruit. Do you have friends who play? Do you attend other home games? If so, then likely I and other home game hosts have some free advice for you that you might utilize!

Some of my best friends came from my old meetup.com poker group. We were all randos at one point. I'd go so far as to say that almost all of my friends in this town, I met through meetup.

I will grant you that if OP is talking about a game with a buy in higher than $50, the level of concern does go up a bit. But for a 'beers and BS' low stakes game, well I'll just say that one's comfort with random internet strangers is somewhat generational.

And if OP is sweating the $12/month for a meetup group, then he's prob not yet hosting medium-stakes games.

Thanks for the advice about bar poker. WTP is something I stumbled across and a bar down the street from me participates in it. There weren't, at first glance, any real card players among them though. My impression was that if the bar was hosting bingo instead, that's what they'd all be doing. That may change from week to week and from bar to bar that is associated with the network though, so we'll see.

In terms of casino stakes my main game is the $500 buy-in $1-$2 at WWW in AC. The purpose of this regular live micro game I'd like to host is mostly to network with other poker players who are reasonably good or working to get better and play with each other in a micro environment that isn't going to put a dent into anyone's roll.

I'd really like to have a network of folks with whom to bounce ideas off of and get better. Not a single one of my RL friends is a card player sadly however. It's enough to make one ashamed for the entire human race.

Well your proposed stakes are certainly low enough to attract most beginners or folks with very limited resources to dedicate to poker. What I mean is that this (.10 -.25) should not "scare" or discourage most folks. OTOH it might be too low stakes to interest the kind of players from the casino that you might be considering. Anyway talk it up with them at whatever venue and stress the lower stakes, especially at the bar games. Also encourage them to talk with others and see if you can form a crew to start up. Our group is several years (10+) old and we use the sponsor system to bring in new folks from time to time. Established players introduce new folks and have some responsibilty for them. It works well and you should consider it AFTER you have been able to put together a crew of your own. Use this forum to ask specific questions. You will not get trolled (very much) and it is free. More information is needed about you and your situation for me to give you the best advice that I can offer...

1) Do you already have a "core" group of players to build a game around?

By "core", I mean friends that play that you have already been around in a poker setting to gauge how they behave while drinking, how well they take bad beats, how well they interact with and treat other players, and in which you already have at least some level of trust.

2) Is there someone you know that has a game that you may be able to partner with in order to have access to a larger pool of players?

You may know someone that already hosts a game but may have trouble making games easily. This would be a great opportunity to add your player pool to his player pool, in theory making it easier for games to come together.

3) Are you located in a player-rich area?

If there are casinos nearby, as well as bar leagues (as has already been mentioned), these are great places to meet new players that you can potentially invite to your game. AS SOMEONE SAID EARLIER IN THIS THREAD, DO NOT POACH PLAYERS!!! Poaching is a cardinal sin in the home game community and can get you blacklisted from certain games. There is unwritten etiquette when it comes to spreading the word that you have a game and are looking for new players.

I have successfully ran home games almost continuously since 2005. It comes with a lot of trial-and-error and making it right for YOUR players. The best advice I can offer is to emulate the casino as much as possible with regard to equipment and rules. One thing about home games that is pretty much universal is that all players want a well-ran game where they get to see a maximum number of hands per session. If you have a dedicated dealer to enforce rules and keep the game going it makes for a better experience, IMO. There are lots of good threads filled with great info in the Home Poker Forum. As far as equipment, I actually am pretty well set up. While I'm stepping back into hosting, I did quite a bit of it several years ago when the game was booming (I've been playing for about 14 years). I have clay chips (not just those cheaper plastic metal slug chips), copags, and a very nice, if somewhat small dedicated card table. Solid wood with leather surface. Unfortunately it's a 6-max table but I could set up an additional table if I started to attract players. That would be a nice problem to have.

I know you said that your current group of friends aren't card players. It make it tough to get your own game together right away.

Some good advice already mentioned, is to find another home game to play in. It will scratch that itch, and you may find what you are looking for, i.e. People to bounce ideas around, post game discussion, and other related topics.

The game I'm currently playing in has changed locations/hosts many times over the years. Perhaps one of the game you find will need a new location. That isn't to say you should poach players, merely that if there is a problem, you'll be there to step in. Maybe the host can't do it one week, and you can host that week. Maybe there are players looking for a 2nd night, you could host the 2nd game.

Unsure what other hobbies you have. I know some of my friends got into MTG, and there are lots of card players there. All the players in my current game are cigar guys, not suggesting you start using tobacco as a means to host poker, but whatever other activities you enjoy may have hidden poker players. It may be as easy as starting to chat about the WSOP and see who responds.
