Please read the books. If you are on the fence get in there and try them out. The story is much more detailed and character's motives are properly explained through their thoughts and the extra depth provides more logical actions.

I just finished Book 1 and already feel like I have so much more context on the series than I did before. Looking forward to jumping into Book 2.
I was going to wait until the TV series ended before reading the books but from what I heard the TV series have caught up with the books, To the book readers: no worries about spoilers if that's true?
See the above post, they are basically at the same point with some minor adjustments as far as pace. That said there are now some major differences in the plots and some characters/plotlines in the books that have just been completely removed from the show.
Imo the books at this point are a much superior product. The only reason to not read is laziness.
I will read the books but only once the show is finished. The reason being I will still get just as much enjoyment from reading the books even after watching the show while I won't be able to enjoy the show as much as I do if I were to read the books first.
I watched the first season of the show, and then read all 5 books in the course of 2 weeks. I recommend reading them, but there are some chapters that are a bit of a slog. Particularly Sansa's in the first 2 books.
The existence of the series don’t encourage to read the book of Game of Thrones. Of course, it’s better to watch this on television or on computer. It’s avoid of spoiling too.
