Re: HBO LEAKED SPOILERS DISCUSSION (TV SHOW SPOILERS)

I've felt that way about the dragons in every way so far this season. When they burned the lannister army I thought it looked great and was excited but felt it was a big let down at the same time.

Probably going to be a lot more "that was awesome but could've been done much better" moments at this rate.

hahaha truth

If Dany is going to fly to save them, why not just take a day trip to check the dead in the first place? Would have been cooler if a dragon attacks the Night King and he puts the ice spear in during the attack.

The pacing has gone to ****. Arya and Sansa are hanging out at night and not talking about what they know. Sansa "I was a young, stupid girl. A hostage trying to save my Father." End of fight.
Arya is now some emotionless killer, and the actress has struggled to convey that all season. From Hot Pie interaction to Sansa.

I can't figure out how I feel about this episode. First half was great - the different convos with all the different characters, we need more of that. When they got attacked by the bear it was thrilling and I thought someone important might actually die, butnah.

I actually don't think the timejumps are that egregious. The thing that should have taken the most time was Gendry running back to the wall. After that, I think a raven could reasonably fly to Dragonstone in... less than a day? And then Dany flying back north could take a few hours.

I don't understand why the Night King didn't just freeze the ice himself since that's probably a thing he can do, then have his army attack.

About the dragon melting the wall, what if he breaths ice, not fire?

Agree that Benjen coming back is pretty stupid. Why do D&D love to make it look like major characters are gonna die when we all know they're not?

As far as the Winterfell stuff... pretty dumb. I was hoping that Arya would be able to see through Littlefinger's manipulations, because that would actually be interesting. Of course they didn't go that route.

Did Arya give the dagger to Sansa just to say, "I don't even need this if I wanna kill you" sorta thing?
Had this thought, but I suppose this, and the fact that they didnt fire anything at the 7 standing on the island could* be related to the night king having some sort of advanced Bran abilities. If he could see in the future he may of been waiting for the Dragon to come.

Re: HBO LEAKED SPOILERS DISCUSSION (TV SHOW SPOILERS)

I just don't understand the Arya stuff, Sansa is acting about as expected but wth, I thought the whole point of Arya's storyline in Braavos at it's end was Arya not being able to shake the Arya "identity". They decide to just forget that and turn her into a ****ing psycho Assassin?

I thought it was pretty obvious that they were holding off hoping a dragon would show. They were ready for them at least.

I defended Maisie Williams in another thread but she is definitely horrendously miscast as whatever Arya is supposed to be now. Not a lot you can do about it as someone pointed out, her casting was fine for AGOT Arya.

Re: HBO LEAKED SPOILERS DISCUSSION (TV SHOW SPOILERS)

Why the hell didn't Benjen just pull Jon onto the horse or get on behind him? "No time?" Looked like he had a good 30 seconds before any wights even got near him.

Was also really annoyed at their concern over the captured wight while they were surrounded by WWs and about to die themselves. Priorities maybe?

I wonder if the Night King will ride that dragon? And I assume it will breathe ice instead of fire. Hopefully Bran can warg into it when the time comes.

I seem to recall the last guy to accuse Tormund of wanting to suck a dick was immediately met with several lethal clubs to the head. Kind of a major character break for him to laugh it off when the hound says it, no?

I agree the Arya/Sansa stuff is dumb and poorly acted. They're trying to force a conflict where there shouldn't be one.

I just have to say, as much as we all criticize Emilia, she is nailing the loving Jon Snow scenes. I can FEEL the tension!

Maisie nailed the fight scene with Brienne. This season it feels like she's trying to convey too much in too few scenes. Same for Sophie Turner. Just because the likes of Lena Headley can do it, doesn't mean everyone can. (And she's had much more screen time)

The dead could only come and get them once the ice froze again, why didn't they just keep breaking the ice?

Re: HBO LEAKED SPOILERS DISCUSSION (TV SHOW SPOILERS)

Evidence this season that Dany is going to die, possibly earlyish next season,

- Randall Tarley saying he wont bend the knee to a foreign invader, specifically mentioning that he valued that Cersei has at least "lived in westoros all her life". Jon won't have this issue
- Drogon showing Jon quite a bit of affection, I would think if he was going to ride rheagal this scene would of been with him? Only way he rides drogon is if dany dies.
- Tyrion & Dany 5 min convo out of the blue about the line of succession if Dany dies.
- The probably 4 or 5 times it was mentioned this season how vulnerable Dany is on top of Drogon.

These hints are what this show does, Jon's resurrection, Jon being targ, they aren't clever about it.

I'll admit a couple of those examples might be a reach, but Tyrion and Danys decently long convo (for this show this season) about her line of succession seems like a huge sign.

It may also be that he knew they were ****ed. There's no rush. Whereas with the dragons, he needed his best weapons to make it a fight.

Maybe the spears run out: he might've been preserving his best weapons. Or he might've been hiding them until it mattered, something us poker players can relate to perhaps.

lol seems pretty nitty and dumb. Say they're 50 miles from the wall and ~ 200 miles from dany. could easily take less than half a day with dragon flight.

According to the various maps and calculations around its 1800-2200 miles from wall to dragonstone.

Hasn't uncle ben already done the same thing in the past with Bran?

Also my main questions would be

Where the **** is Theon?
What happened to the undead giants we saw in the army at the opening of season 7. Seems like this was only a portion of the undead army/WW

Benjen turning up does not seem that egregious to me, whats he going to do in his spare time?

Tracking the UD army seems like it would be pretty much his full time gig, and even if not, pretty sure dragons might peek his interest to come have a look.

Most absurd part of the whole episode is how the army of the dead had a **** load of massive chains just conveniently laying around to pull out the dragon.

Anyone else think Arya is setting up Littlefinger by playing his game right now? She's been trained to be an elite assassin, too good to be outfoxed by him. Maybe all this is a ruse to set up LF like how she did it to the Waif. Arya turning on Sansa so abruptly seems fishy to me.

Agreed that Dany will die, probably not until the very end of the show though. The vision scenes from (I think?) Season 2 were suggestive. Dany is in a shattered Red Keep, reaches out to touch the Iron Throne, but pulls back. Then she travels into another room where Drogo and her son are alive and well.

Yeah. I've thought that Arya will kill Littlefinger since before the start of the season. Arya's arc is sort of a monomyth variant, where she has traveled to strange lands and learned powerful new skills. In the monomyth, the next step is for her to return home and put those powers to work in service of her family and friends. Her power is as an assassin, therefore this will involve her killing someone. The tension between her and Sansa increases the catharsis of this moment. I don't think the slaughter at the Twins counts, since that was neither at home nor in service of anyone living. That was her own personal revenge.

I'm less clear on where Sansa's story is going, for a little while I thought we might see a heel turn, but I'm not so sure about that now. Her arc is loss of innocence, which could go in all kinds of different directions.

Edit: Also I thought Littlefinger's death was going to be this season, but I guess not now. Instead they probably end on a cliffhanger of maximum tension between Arya and Sansa, to be resolved next season. I have to also say that part of the reason I thought Arya would kill Littlefinger, what put the idea in my head I guess, was the promo picture of Arya holding the dagger. That doesn't seem super relevant now, but I haven't changed my mind.

I thought it was a great episode. People just need to relax and enjoy the ride at this point. The plot holes were no worse than you could find in any random classic sci-fi/fantasy movie.

However, I agree Sophie and Maisie are not selling their scenes well at all. They lack any kind of tension or emotion. Just two average actresses reading lines.

On the other hand, Emilia Clarke really sold her scenes with Jon Snow - definitely the high water mark for her in the show so far.

Yeah. I liked it because some of the stuff that has been bad so far this season (characterization, dialogue) was much improved (edit: though agreed with Elrazor about the acting in the Arya/Sansa scenes). Also, despite the teleportation and the zombie dragons, the episode was actually quite a lot smaller in scope. Only a few locations and only two real plotlines - the mission north and palace intrigue in Winterfell.

That said, there was a bit of eyerolling stuff - in particular Benjen randomly riding in to save the day. Overall I thought it was really good though, in competition with Ep 4 for the best of the season.
