I think it probably goes a completely different direction as we have been promised a huuuuuge "wtf" moment.

The thing with the lord of light is that he is portrayed as "the good god to bring everlasting summer blablabla" by his followers but the actions in the show aren't in line with that.
The worst act of the show, burning an innocent child, was afterall commited by melisandre/lord of light.
So there has to be more to the night king as well, he can't be pure evil, doesn't fit into the show at all.
Last big twist has to come out of that somehow(everything else, like jamie taking down cersei wouldn't be a big twist at all)

Where did the Melisandre plot line leave off?

Last time we saw her was talking to Varies at dragonstone I think it's called. I think she talked about both of them dying from fire, the memory is hazy on that. She was keeping herself out of sight after being banished. Sounds like she'll be back in the story just to die for whatever reason.

She was leaving Dragonstone to go to a city..forget where...Varos said it would be best she not come back and she replied, no I have to return to this cursed land so that I can die, same as u will. So basically she is going to return and die in some manner before the end of season 8.

I wonder if benioff and Weiss will pick up this loose end.

i mean they went 5 miles out of their way to insert that plot point as a means to wrap Mel/Varys only last season, it'd be downright bizarre to not spend 5 minutes paying it off before the show ends, but who knows

Any chance we'll get answers about why she's secretly old and ugly?

what's there to answer?

Seems like she's a sorceress who masks her old age with an illusion, pretty standard in fantasy stories

I m not completely on board with the jon is a targereon and ned lied to cat all this time and claimed him as a bastard with some battle side piece. Why would honorable ned let cat "hate" jon for years and years as a child, for appearances? Her tx on jon was her major character flaw and ned could not trust her w that secret? Maybe we will see another plot twist here.....

There's a theory going around that the girl with the marked face in the last ep was Melisandre, wearing a glamour of the same kind she normally wears to hide her true age. The theory is that she wants to be in the crypts to protect people, but wants to hide herself from the likes of Davos who hate her. I don't really buy it, but it's possible.

Jon is a Targereon and Ned did lie to his wife about Jon, those are facts.

hiding herself in a child mask that reminds people(davos) of the child she burned?
what kind of cruel joke would that be lol, makes no sense really

Why does she do it? Is it a curse or her choice?

And what's the story with the jeweley she has to wear to look not decrepit?

If none of that matters, why even make it a thing in the first place?

well an old and ugly witch isn't as charming and convincing as a young and beatiful one especially when the lord of light stands for LIFE, neverending summer and stuff like that.
Manipulating is an important skill for her

She's also supposed to (per comments from showrunners) be anything up to 400 years old, it might be that she has to use the ruby to even stay alive. She's a mysterious character in the books as well, we don't know a lot about her agenda. She's probably going to be one of the many subplots the show put an axe through so it can actually finish the story.

Even after she took the necklace off
Spoiler:
I'd still hit it.

Says his brother, best friend Sam and now KJP? Yiu may not have convinced Dany but you convinced me!

My 3rd episode laughable death predictions:

Spoiler:

SAFE: Bran, Sam, Jon, Dany, The Night King, Viserion, Rhaegal
  • I think Bran and Sam are my surest bets to survive it all (with a side of Jon). Bran is the memory of humankind, Sam is probably gonna be its scribe (also, he's the author avatar).
  • Since it would be too early for the NK to die, Viserion dying would make him lose a lot of shine.
  • I don't think the showrunners showed the montage of Jon riding Rhaegal ony for him to die in e3.

PRETTY SAFE: Sansa, Jaime, the Hound, Varys, Tyrion and Arya
  1. I don't buy the show's hints on Tyrion being the one who is destined to kill Cersei. I still think it's gonna be Jaime, so he has to survive.
  2. The Hound still needs to kill his brother.
  3. I am a bit worried about Arya: she has killed a lot of people, she ****ed Gendry, and the two most prominent names of her list are not really hers anymore (see Jaime and the Hound).
  4. Varys still has not done **** in s8, so he kind of needs to survive this episode.

COULD GO EITHER WAY: Missandei, Drogon and Gilly
  1. Missandei is obv at huge risk but someone needs to mourn Grey Worm.
  2. I think the dragons are doomed (bc it would be interesting to see what does Dany do without them) and Drogon does not have the plot armour the other two have atm.
  3. Gilly is as safe as the crypts are, IMO.

PROBABLY DED: Davos, Yohn Royce, Gendry, Lyanna, Tormund
  1. Davos might live bc he still has not done anything worth of note in this season, but the theory that he dies protecting the disfigured girl is really attractive.
  2. Gendry might live to fulfill Robert Baratheon's words to Ned ("let's join our houses").
  3. Tormund is the last wildling left (no one considers Gilly to be a wildling anymore).
  4. No one would probably care if Yohn Royce died, so the show might spare him.
  5. I hope Lyanna dies. She was fun to watch for a couple of scenes, but I feel like the show is keeping her for the memes. Her riding into battle against the dead is laughable. Isn't she like 13?

THEY DED: Jorah, Brienne, Ghost, Pod, Dolorous Edd, Grey Worm, Theon, Berric.

This tier probably might contain one or two survivors, but I would be really surprised if any of the last three (Grey Worm, Theon, Berric) lived through the next ep.

seems like a really dumb theory. the idea that melisandre can somehow protect a ton of people from the undead doesn't make any sense. Seems way more likely it was just a nice character moment for Gilly and Davos.

are u serious??

you don't have to explain every little detail in a tv series or story, esp a fantasy based one that spans 8 seasons and is based on book/world that spans centuries.

she's a witch, who worships a lord of light and is part of some weird ancient cult religion who has powers due to her "religion" ... same as Beric who can for some weird ass reason set his sword on fire with his hand.

We've gotten insights into fire sword guy's rx with LoL and his history. We've gotten nothing of the sort with Melisandre IIRC other than inexplicably hinting at her feigning being hot by using a necklace that makes her hide the fact that she's 500 years old. It's unnecessary if there's no follow through.

Her glamour was put into the story in order to make another plot line seem less far fetched. That entire plot was dropped in the show.
