right, brienne of tarth, who was born without a sense of humor or irony and has all the subtlety of a ****ing jackhammer, sentenced stannis to die and then they cut away right as she changes her mind and decides the guy who has no army, no friends and would be killed on sight by the dominant army of the north is going to somehow help her out.
come on people. there are twists and there are twists. that would be some m night shamalama type ****. this show does a lot of brutal stuff but it rarely gives us totally random, out-of-the-blue twists with no foreshadowing or narrative value. stannis' arc is over, and takes with it an important statement about ruling and morality in GoT land.
there's an interesting parallel with cersei here, too. both got themselves into trouble. both were inflexible, absolutist and deeply flawed (in different ways). both were put to a test - stannis was asked to kill his own blood in brutal fashion in order to win a war. cersei was asked to renounce her pride in order to buy herself a chance to hold onto power. cersei's willingness to give in, and to show some level of compromise or at least playing along, kept her alive and gave her another chance, though she paid the price. stannis' inability to adjust and his insane focus on his "destiny" at the expense of his family brought about his downfall.
