But the elevator nits are lol. They actually built a working elevator on set. That's how it works.
you can either have one way (up or down) movement without additional energy input (if the counterweight is very heavy or light compared to the platform), or you can continually bring a bunch of men down from the wall (if the counterweight is greater than the empty platform, but less than the weight of the platform+men), but you can't have it continually running men up and down just by throwing a lever. and that's not even taking into account the friction losses, which must be huge.

that's not how it works. the one on set almost certainly uses technology not available to the night's watch, ie a battery or electrically powered motor, which would be safer, cheaper and easier.

the previous point regarding elevator operation is that elevator technology could be reproduced without electricity, which some people apparently didn't realize. a counterweight slightly lighter than the elevator allows the lift to lower on its own. use of pulleys and levers allow even a child to raise it via a ratcheting system.

definitely this.

also wtf at you guys complaining about how the Iron isles / land beyond the wall wouldn't have the environment to support so many troops, or whether the ****ing elevator would work. THERE ARE GIANTS, WITCHES, DRAGONS AND ZOMBIES.

I don't get this line of thinking, just because there are supernatural elements doesn't mean you can throw out the laws of physics, logic, etc in all elements of the story.

haha. yes it does. this is a fantasy genre and supernatural kind of means defies the laws of logic. nitting about how an elevator works is outrageous, we're talking about a mile high ice-wall built to keep away ice zombies. Jon could hop on a a train to go see the Wilding King and it wouldn't hinder my enjoyment one bit.

It may have been mentioned, but I just realized that Mance doesn't know that Jon went Crow again.

Noone's enjoyment gets hindered by the elevator. What else can you write about after a week with no episode though?

Can somebody help me with this? Jon originally was excited to go to the wall to meet up with his uncle. Once there we find out his uncle went North and has been missing.

Have we gotten any resolution, and if so does anyone remember which episode? Is It possible his uncle is still alive? Or do I remember him being a white walker at one point?

Like your English teacher taught you in creative writing, "don't tell me, show me."
From reddit:

http://youtu.be/goaCO0Xgs0w?t=55s

This scene from Episode 6 shows the origins of the scroll with the seal of the Hand that was sent to Barristan Selmy that exposed Jorah Mormont's past spying in Episode 8. The Small Council was discussing the threat of Daenerys and how to deal with her. Tywin takes her threat seriously, and eventually asks Mace to fetch him his quill and paper. The scene shows that Tywin was scheming to separate Jorah and Daenerys to weaken Daenerys's position and destroy his enemy from within rather than by using force.

"She must be dealt with."

"How, my lord? By force?"

"Eventually, if it comes to that."

"Your little birds find their way into Meereen?"

"Most certainly, my lord Hand."

"Mmm. Lord Tyrell, be a good man, fetch my quill and paper...."

A nice little nugget that may not have been noticed after the Mountain/Viper fight scene....

I'm in the "that episode was awesome" camp

That's actually exactly what it means. Are there actually people in this thread that are thinking about how the elevator will work? I mean, I knew OOTV was nitty but my lord, I had no idea there were that nitty that existed in this world. To be honest, the existence of someone that nitty is much more surprising to me than actual dragons existing in our world.

Can't imagine they try another escalade (that's a fancy word for assaulting a fortification by climbing the walls) now that that badass giant scythe is in play. Would you get on there?

I'm picturing major morale problems in the Wildling army. They're an army of traditionally rival tribes tenuously held together. For sure Mance knew about the scythe so i imagine people who saw their brothers/sons/fathers/friends killed by that thing are gonna be unhappy.

Just got spoiled for episode 10 A simple youtube comment on a bee video .... I advice anyone to not read anything anywhere lol

I doubt it. Mance will see Jon walking out of the gate. Given that the Nights Watch still controls the gate, I think it would be clear that they opened for him. If he were still a traitor and participated in the attack, I doubt they would let him go like that.

The "anti-elevator-conversation" people have put more words into this than the "anti-elevator" or "pro-elevator" people.

Nobody cares about the elevator.

They need to get some giant archers to take that thing out.

I've gone all this time thinking she's a natural redhead, I'm a bit disappointed now

Re: whether Mance knows Jon went back to being a crow, I was reading some recap type of article somewhere and it said that once he pulled the switch-back, the crew he was with (red-beard and co.) sent a raven message to Mance to inform him, and upon getting that message, his response was to send the cannibal dudes up to join that party. The author mentioned that as part of a rant about how dumb the wildling crew has been, calling that sequence to be an insufficient or otherwise objectionable response to the news.

I personally don't remember that all being shown, but I also cant recall any other explanation for the cannibal arrival - they just showed up at some point and there was some killing of some randoms involved. So it makes sense thats how it went down and that Mance knows full well Jon = enemy.

Even if thats wrong, its been a long time and would be hard to imagine that the group who knows he switched has never bothered to inform Mance in some way. Plus the wildlings have the wargs that have been spying on the wall personnel and they'd have seen him.

It would be a pretty big stretch if they are really moving ahead with Mance being unaware and using that as Jon's method of killing Mance.

But that brings me to something that's incomprehensible - why in 7 hells did Jon give Sam his sword before heading out on his solo mission? It's basically a suicide mission with him fully armed, but rolling into enemy-infested territory with no clue where Mance even is, limited to about 24 hrs before assault 2, without even bringing any type of weapon? That's a level of nonsensical that I'm not sure I've ever seen topped. I hope he comes across some 70 year old consumptive wildling, who does have a sword, chilling by himself, and then promptly getting killed by him in the short-lived bare-knuckle vs sword fight. End of Jon Snow.

And as a final note, even if Jon said the attack was merely a kicking the tires mission, I don't buy it. Nothing else about it gave any indication that was the case. I remain fully convinced that the battle just stalled and the remaining forces indeed decided "they'd had enough for one night", as the NW dude said as they retreated.

There were 4 main components of the battle1) attack from south (2) attack from north (3) force access to the tunnel (4) attack by climbing wall. 1 and 3 and 4 failed and 2 wasnt really going anywhere, so they fell back to take another run. Not by design. LAI

Yeah the Oberyn's death got spoiled for me in some random Reddit comment.

During the season it's best to not read too many comment style places. It's not as bad during the off-season.

Yeah I caught an article somewhere yesterday too. If it's the same story I'm not reading anything into it, could be misdirection.
