Throughout most of last season there was debate about who was holding Theon. I had no idea where people were getting Bolton's Bastard from, but I just got it last night in S2E7 or E8 - he was the head of the bannermen who Robb sent to retake Winterfell. Of course we now know they were also the ones who burned it down afterward.

When did Bolton decide to betray Robb and side with the Lannisters? I never really picked up on that. Was it ever explicitly shown/said?

Explicit? No, not at any point.

However, it was very implicit. If you look at the way Robb was portrayed in season 2 as "King in the North!", you'll see his bannermen and troops constantly looking at him with respect. He's out there with them sharing thoughts about their gear, shaking their hands, giving out hugs, etc.

Then, a shift happens right at the end of season 2, right after Cat lets the Kingslayer escape. Season 3 begins with a completely opposite tone. The troops (mainly Bolton and Karstark) start looking at him with disappointment in their eyes. Matter of fact, check out the scene in the first episode of S3, when they arrive at Harrenhall to find nothing but dead bodies. Watch the looks Rob is getting when he "sentences" his mother to quarters. They know he's being easy on her and they no longer trust him to be a fair leader. Karstark and Bolton exchange a few slightly treasonous words, and finally, Bolton lies about one of the ravens sent to him about Winterfell.

I'm pretty sure there was more from Bolton after that, like the way he treated Jaime's arrival in "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" episode. EDIT: Or was it before that? (It's the first time Bolton sees Jaime [without his right hand] in season 3)

Yup I remember that he started losing respect with his weak punishment on Cat. I just wonder if his bastard burned down Winterfell on Bolton's orders, that would put the start of his betrayal pretty early on, before Cat let the Kingslayer go. And if not, why would he do that to someone who was an ally at the time? I realize the kid's an ******* but you wouldn't do something so extreme unless you knew it was ok.

These episodes are actually on tonight (S2E9-S3E1) so I'll try to give them another watch.
