In-world, that is supposed to be roughly the distance from New York City to the Mexican border, each way.
This isn't only nerd nitpicking, the distances are supposed to have narrative consequences. For instance, the reason the South (King's Landing, etc) are so complacent about the White Walkers and dismissive of the stories of the Night's Watch is in part because that **** is all a continent away.
