It is odd that not a single correct thing about paying taxes on poker winnings has been posted in this thread. You and your friend are either completely ignorant of US tax law concerning poker or you're presenting a fantasy to scam a foreigner. Go check the tax FAQ in the legislation forum. He owed taxes on net winnings in the year he won if filing as a pro. Black Friday was actually on the day he should have filled and potentially owed the taxes. He's already been a tax cheat, potentially. You guys are presenting a story like US players pay taxes on withdrawal and that's untrue. Lots of good posts on 2+2 about taxes and BF. The story he told and you're backing has no basis in facts presented by knowledgeable people on here. IANAL and you should consult a professional.
He may be wrongly scared or he could be lying, but the "he now owes tax" story isn't factual. Again, US taxes are based on money won, not on cashouts.

Zach was actually majorly distraught over this. He feels pretty awful about the whole situation, but it's too late now. Tomas chose the path he did, so he's giving up the money, in my mind.
Isn't it just a classic scammer ploy to say now that the victim has outed him that he won't pay? He wasn't paying before. You're helping with the scam by standing up and pretending the victim is to blame. You've got your buddy's back, and that's noble. You're both wrong. He agreed to pay vig on getting immediate cash on money that might never come. Money in hand he's stealing $4k, giving the excuse of broke or taxes. If I claim to be short cash, can I come to your place and steal something?
No one cares how Zach feels. He can actually fix this, by making good. All the quotes from him and your excuses are classic scammer stuff. We've all seen it a dozen times. You can take the high handed "forum trolls are blowing this out of proportion" line. No reasonable person has agreed with Zach's side. Heck, the OP offered arbitration. Zach said no because he knows he's wrong.
