I know this is a kinda dumb question because the answer is just there are alot of fish but I have been wanting to ask it for a while to see if there are reasons Im missing. I just dont get how literally every website/book will tell you never to do this but yet so many tables I play have limpers. And I get that sometimes limping sb is ok and like AA but besides that why just why, do some people think they are good at postflop or something? Not that I want it to stop lol

Reasons would be numerous, but with differences based on what stage of an event one was seeing the open limping.

Open limping is terrible except in the SB and in unique spots that don't come up often to even worry about.

Think open limping can be ok three handed sometimes. Also small pairs play well as open limp if someone has limped first. I think its ok to open limp with suited conns once in a while as well.

Shorthanded in certain situations you can open-limp the button with the right dynamics

As for why people open-limp? Because they are really bad

Full ring limping is fine when deep stacked with hands that play best multi-way on passive /station tables and-or if u have a big edge post flop

I think the reason why your average limper limps is a sort of optimistic curiousity - "I wonder if my 64s is going to flop a straight flush?" which is why they are usually reluctant to fold to a raise preflop.

I have heard of strong players throwing limps into the mix sometimes to try to disrupt their opponents games -a bit like the way that odd opening moves in chess get your opponent away from the text book - I haven't tried this but I kind of like the idea.

People get so caught up in aggression which is fine as a basic default strategy but really each situation has its own unique dynamic which we should be capable of adjusting to.

It’s like ....Just because recreational open limp a lot and do it poorly don’t let that stop you from considering it as an option

In some circumstances open raising is a good play sure , but limping is a better one.

I forget which tournament series it was, but there was a stream recently (this year) where lots of the v top players were open limping with 20-40bb stacks.

I agree in general, in online soft mtts, that open limping is usually bad (and most people that do open limp are fish) but that doesn't mean limping = always bad.

It is the same as playing from the sb - few years ago it was standard to openraise or fold, nowadays lots of good players complete as their default line.

Icm, if your on a bubble or ft, you might want to limp call hands rather than raise fold to 3bet if the big stacks are aggro. This allows u still play hands without being abused, so you would limp T9s as well as AA and it’s pretty hard to exploit

Can't edit my post - but fairly sure it was this year aussie millions high roller where the decent players were limping a fair amount (and its something i've seen in some of the other high roller streams).

Worth a watch if you are considering limping and want to see it carried out by decent players
